We were lucky enough to have Guy Poppy CB FMedSci, interim executive chair of BBSRC talk to us at #AFNBigTent about why the food system needs to change, and the funding that's available through UKRI to help make that happen. Some key insights from his talk: 🌱 Food is unique in that it spans all of UKRI impact's five strategic themes 💸 The amount of money spent by UKRI on food is growing - more than £300m in 2020/21 👨🌾 Lots of exciting projects going on across the UK, a bottom up approach - whether through community action groups, work of cities or counties - is enabling things to happen which would be difficult to do on a national/international scale. ⭕ We need a shared vision for food, and until that's agreed, plans for delivery will be difficult

From 'community spaces' to low-cost food hubs, a range of support remains available for residents across the Borough struggling with the cost-of-living. The help on offer from Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council is part of the authority's 'A Fairer Stockton-on-Tees' (FSOT) framework, launched in 2021. And a meeting of the Council's Cabinet on Thursday (May 16), heard how in addition to the long-term vision of reducing inequalities, there's also more short-term focus on guiding residents through the current economic climate. This has led to a number of avenues of help for residents, accessible by visiting the 'here to help hub' web page (https://lnkd.in/eSgPihnj). "We know that there are a number of residents who continue to feel the wide-ranging effects of the cost-of-living crisis, but thankfully there is lots of help at hand," says the Council's Leader, Councillor Bob Cook. "For example, the 'community spaces' initiative now has more than 70 venues signed up, which goes well beyond just providing a warm space and has a broader offer to include things like learning and skills courses. The number of residents who have utilised a community space now stands at nearly 3,000 over the last 12 months. "The Bread and Butter Thing low-cost food hubs, ran by the brilliant local volunteers, have proven to be very popular for residents and are a vital lifeline for close to 400 families each week. In total, more than 6,000 people have accessed the offer, which is very heartening indeed. "We also held 'here to help' events across a range of venues and they were attended by a number of partners such as Moneywise and Cleveland Fire Brigade. Look out for more of these events to come soon. "And this outstanding work alongside our partners comes at a time when our 'Powering Our Future' programme ramps up across the Council to ensure we're fully utilising the potential of our communities and voluntary sector to provide better outcomes for our residents." We are thrilled to share that Development Workshop Namibia (DWN) has been featured in a recent article in the Namibian Sun newspaper. 🎉 DWN's mission is to prevent the growth of informal settlements and improve the lives of residents across Namibia. The article highlighted our organisation's ongoing mass communication campaign on sanitation, as supported by German Development Bank KfW. We are extremely proud to have reached approximately 17 000 households🏅, aiming for 25 000 by August. Our mass communication campaign has made a significant impact across eight towns, specifically Karibib, Katima Mulilo, Ondangwa, Oniipa, Oshakati, Otjiwarongo, Swakopmund, and Windhoek. Working through a Community-Led Total Sanitation #CLTS approach, out community workers are actively engaging in discussions about handwashing, toilet construction, waste management, and recycling with target communities, household by household. Our efforts have led to significant milestones, including the declaration of 16 areas as open defecation-free, six of which are in Windhoek. DWN is committed to addressing the challenges associated with rapid informal urbanisation, such as land and housing, sanitation, solid waste, and Early Childhood Development (ECD). Notably, our work aligns closely with the findings from last year's UNICEF progress report, which highlighted Namibia's high open defecation rates and the resultant impact on public health, particularly in urban informal areas. As part of the campaign, menstrual health management is being addressed, fostering open and constructive discussions on this vital topic within households Namibia. By working together to raise awareness about the importance of proper sanitation practices, we can build a healthier and more sustainable future for all Namibian residents. The Youth Action Fund was established to transform the life chances of disadvantaged youth in Scotland. Engagement can be a challenge, with young people hesitant to fully participate in society and wary of authority. To meaningfully connect, a tailored approach is key. That’s where the Youth Action Fund comes in. Many young individuals, especially those facing the harsh realities of generational worklessness and poverty, find themselves cut off from mainstream services like school and clubs. This isolation, coupled with economic challenges, leaves them ill-equipped for success. That’s why the Youth Action Fund is so crucial. One of the challenges that the cuts to public services hides is the relationship to NGOs who - on the financial equivalent of the smell of an oily rag - support the vulnerable in our communities. Some departments have cut these links to meet budgetary constraints, despite the fact that these sever lifelines for some who are struggling. And then, if sufficiently desperate, some turn to crime, we apparently have a vast capacity to built and staff new prisons. What is that saying about ambulances and cliffs?

New research into #socialsupermarkets from CSI Flinders has featured on channel 7's Sunrise 🙌 As the cost-of-living crisis affects a growing number of Australians, a progressive model in SA is providing an alternative, more dignified, way to access affordable food. What are social supermakets? Often described as a step beyond emergency #foodrelief, they look and feel like a retail environment but provide social support and connection opportunities to empower people towards pathways out of #foodinsecurity. Things like no interest loans, financial counselling, work experience, volunteering opportunities, low-cost cafés and cooking programs provide crucial assistance in more areas of peoples lives.  In the latest research, academics from the Centre for Social Impact at Flinders University, in collaboration with SA State Government and The Food Centre unveil the first (ever!) comprehensive definition of social supermarkets.
