“Same Procedure as Last Year" In Europe, year-end celebrations often revolve around rituals and traditions. In Sweden and Germany, the annual airing of "Dinner for One" on New Year's Eve is a classic tradition. This comedy sketch, originally a theatre piece, features Miss Sophie, a 90-year-old hosting a dinner for her birthday. With all her friends departed, her butler, James, steps in, playing each guest and indulging in their drinks, leading to comedic chaos as the evening progresses. Having lived in Sweden for over six years, I'm still baffled by this tradition, yet like everyone else, I tune in yearly (as it's been done since 1976). The catchphrase - “Same procedure as last year” - has even seeped into everyday language. So, why persist with this ritual? Why not change or abandon it? I believe it's about connectivity. This tradition unites us, creating a collective energy that promotes closeness and understanding. It's a reminder to empathise and connect with others, which is so important in today's world. Here's to a Happy New Year, and may 2024 bring you much connection with your family, friends, colleagues and community! https://lnkd.in/dBSj4cmv #emapthy #ritual #connectedness #tradition
