Just wrapped up our May Townhall at The A-List Malaysia, and we feeling so energized! These meetings are such a great way to catch up on what everyone’s been up to and plan for the future. Here’s a little peek into what went down: Highlights from Each Department: Marketing Magic: The marketing team knocked it out of the park with their latest campaign! It really put us on the map. They also shared about a project that didn’t go as planned and what they’re tweaking to make the next one even better. Sales Wins: Sales had some fantastic numbers to share. They've been hustling hard! They talked about some tough spots too, like dealing with a challenging market. Their game plan? Focus more on building strong customer relationships and trying out new sales techniques. Operations Rockstars: The ops team has been killing it with their efficiency improvements. They cut down processing times significantly. But they also mentioned a hiccup with Influencer last month and how they’re fixing it with a new spreadsheet and better list name of KOL's. HR Heroes: HR’s been boosting morale with some awesome employee engagement initiatives. They also addressed a high turnover issue in one department and shared their new approach to recruitment and training to turn things around. Big Takeaways: Learning from Mistakes: It was great to see everyone openly discuss not just their wins but their losses too. It’s all part of growing and getting better. Action Plans for Success: Each team has solid plans to improve and grow. Continuous improvement is the name of the game! Team Spirit: The best part? Seeing how all the departments are working together. We’re stronger as a team, learning from each other’s experiences. We super excited for what’s next. 9-10 March 2024 | Avillion Resort PD My last team building before the Ramadhan period was for BonCafé 🤎 I love this as a finale because this is such an inspiring organization. Their bond transcends organisational structure. They’re more like a family of different races, function and from different location across Malaysia. Many team members have been with the organization for 10-20 years. It’s not uncommon for employees to have started as Technicians to become Branch Managers taking care of regions like East Malaysia (Sabah & Sarawak), North Peninsula (Penang & upwards), Klang Valley Southward & Eastward. To be honest, team building is just a springboard that propels change. More significantly is what drives from the top. That sets the tone of how things should be run. I think I know that very well having been in the corporate world for more than 2 decades. In this company, that is more plausible than most. This is my 2nd time leading the team building for BonCafé. Last year we did it in Sunway Lagoon. While it's fair that HR from Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur asked me to remove the previous post (which I did) and followed up with a meeting, I think it's only right that I share the update and ask all who see this for their perspective. Long story short, myself and a few talented others work for GHKL as part time hosts for their Le Petit Chef dinner service. One day, we got this message and essentially are "no longer required", effective immediately. When my colleagues had asked why / what was the reasoning behind this course of action, the GH staff removed themselves from the group, leaving us with no answers. Fast forward I write a LinkedIn post about this, and they personally called me to take it down and had asked for a meeting. The meeting essentially concluded with them giving a formal apology and that was it. Personally I don't exactly understand why or how this has happened, as this was only my perspective, and I believe to never make judgement with one side of the story alone; which is why I invite my colleagues as well as GHKL to comment below the other sides of this story, so everyone reading this can know what values we hold, what cultures we practice, and ultimately make sense of instances like these that happen countless times in this working world.

How is your first 30 days? Me: 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁! You would not have found me giving this spontaneous response 10 years ago. Having been through the ups and downs of various leaderships, I think I'm at liberty to say the environment created by Arulkumar Singaraveloo goes beyond words. Although we are in a local setup, his leadership style is equivalent to a multinational corporation where voices are heard and actions are taken to mitigate every situation. It's not easy when you have a business to manage and to look after the wellbeing of your staff all at once. For instance, our Townhall yesterday was testament to the fact that he goes to the grassroots of problems and finds the right solutions to move forward as One Team. As employees and business partners working together in the same office, I can see how my colleagues strive to deliver 110% in all their deliverables. The sudden bursts of laughter, the congratulatory messages flying around plus our spacious office create positive vibes in our interactions with our internal and external stakeholders. In my role as a Talent Business Partner leading the recruitment services, this atmosphere helps me in my day-to-day work as I strive to find the Right People for the Right Job for my clients. What does what we eat over Chinese New Year have to do with good meeting facilitation? Over the start of the Year of the Dragon, I had a diversity of foods -- from Chinese steamboat to home-cooked Penang hokkien mi to my mum's famous tomato rice and chicken curry with cucumber salad. Yeah, I know 😋 😋 😋 Plus, I had my favourite cookies -- love letters and my sister-in-law's peanut cookies. This got me thinking about how much the diversity of foods I was enjoying over Chinese New Year lifted the quality of our gatherings. And in Malaysia, we often take it for granted that our palate will always enjoy such diversity. And I realised, while we can take diversity for granted in some spaces, we cannot always take that for granted when we meet formally at meetings where there can be binary, confirmation and other kinds of biases at play. These biases unfortunately limit the quality of our thinking and decision-making, without us even realising it. That's the thing about facilitating meetings. When I facilitate, I intentionally seek to create a space where group intelligence can benefit from a diversity of viewpoints and experiences. As I prepare to facilitate a meeting I ask myself, "What could I be doing to intentionally create space for diversity to happen naturally?", just like Malaysians regularly expect to experience diversity in our foods. What are some of the most ridiculous workplace rules that you have heard of? Why do you think these rules were put in place? What happens if someone breaks these rules, either unknowingly or on purpose? My ridiculous workplace rules? It was my first job out of university, working as a waiter for a popular bar and restaurant in Kampala. I put in the work as needed and did a great job. At this place, you had to ask to use the bathroom and request permission to go home after your shift had ended. People who went to the bathroom frequently and stayed for long periods were monitored. Managers would wait outside the door and time them. After five minutes, managers would yell into the bathroom that five minutes had passed and they needed to hurry up. It felt demeaning and disrespectful to have such strict control over basic human needs. These rules may have been put in place to ensure productivity and prevent employees from taking advantage of breaks. However, they created an atmosphere of distrust and discomfort among staff members. Breaking these rules, whether intentionally or unknowingly, could lead to reprimands, further exacerbating the oppressive work environment. Ultimately, such stringent regulations only serve to undermine morale and foster resentment among employees, rather than fostering a positive and supportive workplace culture.
