In the shipping industry, the overlooked task of moving empty containers significantly impacts costs, accounting for 5% to 8% of operating expenses, with Transmetrics highlighting that there are additional costs for the storage of empty containers and their maintenance, so the total cost of empty logistics is estimated by Transmetrics to be more than 12% of operating costs. George Kochanowski, CEO of Staxxon, points out a critical issue: Last year, repositioning costs per container ranged from $25,000 to $40,000, driven by rising labor, fuel, and land use expenses. Third of container movements are empty, leading to 60 million such moves yearly and costing the industry $20 billion. But here lies the opportunity: Can we rethink and innovate within this space to not only reduce costs but also increase efficiency and sustainability? How can appearing technologies, specifically smart containers help to alleviate this $20 billion challenge? This is a question worth asking and investigating.

💡𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 & 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁💡 At the recent EP&SCE Summit, industry leaders gathered to explore the urgent need for transformation in procurement, driven by sustainability goals and compliance with evolving legislation. ctrl+s GmbH and Siemens partnered to discuss the importance of decarbonizing supply chains and provide solutions for CPOs to manage Scope 3 emissions. ⚙️ 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗣𝗢 Transformation emerged as the central theme of the summit, driven by the twin imperatives of sustainability and regulatory compliance. Anticipating future challenges such as geopolitical shifts and volatile raw material prices is critical. In addition, ensuring supply chain resilience is paramount. In particular, there's a growing recognition that Chief Procurement Officers (CPOs) may soon evolve into Chief Data Officers. This underscores the growing importance of data-driven decision making in navigating the complexities of modern supply chains. ❗️𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 The summit also highlighted the challenges procurement departments are facing, including high turnover rates and a lack of control over the supply chain. To address these challenges, a shift to a people-focused approach to supply chain transformation (e.g. building team cohesion, implementing customer-centric strategies, etc.) was advocated, emphasizing the importance of unifying teams and improving efficiency and resilience. 🪴 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆 Integrating sustainability into procurement practices can improve resilience - but it also requires data-driven decision making. The summit featured lively discussions on how to drive sustainability: Henkel, for example, demonstrated its commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and promoting sustainability across its supplier base by implementing supplier engagement programs. Similarly, the Siemens and ctrl+s roundtable presented a pragmatic approach to tracking emissions reductions along the supply chain, combining statistical data/industry averages and targeted supplier survey data.
