I am conducting a case discussion session with sitting directors from the National Association of Corporate Directors NACD New England Chapter, on Tuesday, May 7th. The topic is "Crisis Management and the Role of the Board." We will discuss a variety of issues and best practices for approaching crisis response such as building internal resiliency, managing shareholder activists and demands for changes to management and compensation, and many other issues of contemporary relevance to board members. This event is for open for sitting public company directors only. Join us by registering at the link below: https://lnkd.in/eCDexSGr
There are many types of crisis responses. A lot of people consider "Cuban Missile Crisis" as one way to handle a crisis - by setting up "Executive Committee" and hear the views out there. Then there is how aerospace engineers view crisis: We first consider outcomes. Consider the Apollo 1 fire which shocked a nation in January 27, 1967. The engineers formed an investigation board with the goal of finding facts. Interestingly, few know the Apollo 1 board examined both technical and management aspects of the event. There was physical evidence to examine, but more importantly, asking a lot of questions of the folks who built the system and spread out to others. Once the final report was produced, the challenge was reading. Few know how to read a crisis report, sadly not taught in school. What is the goal of response? IN case of Apollo 1 fire, the United States dd not end the Apollo Program. Other options were taken. Of course, its is always best to train people BEFORE the crisis unless they prefer to be media stars.
Professor. Suraj Srinivasan, A quick follow to consider an alternative time/date - May 8th? It will be challenging for several of the Board Directors to join the case study session on May 7th even though we will be on the campus joining with the Professor. Karim Lakhani, running the "Leading with AI" day -long session in the campus on May 7th. Would you like to catch up in the morning hours/evening hours? on May 7th with our ACDC/CDC group. Best wishes.
I am looking forward to participating in Professor Suraj Srinivasan's case study discussion program with NACD-NE on May 7. I really enjoyed Professor Srinivasan leading several case studies in my Harvard Business School Corporate Director Certfication Program, which consisted of three great programs, including Audit Committees, Compensation Committees, and Making Corporate Boards More Effective.
This sounds like a highly valuable session on such a critical topic. How do you approach building internal resiliency within the board during times of crisis? Looking forward to hearing some key takeaways from this event.
