After concluding my internship with the Indiana FFA Organization, I was approached by my academic advisor, Chrissie Strong, about the opportunity to be featured as a Purdue University Agricultural Economics Success Story! I wanted my story to be based around the idea of appreciating where you currently are, which led us to the title "Jaydon Kauffman Finds the Power of Being in The Present." Choosing the best graduate program as an RD or future RD can be an overwhelming decision. Today, the USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service publicly released the 2022 Census of Agriculture Data findings. Notably, the USDA NextGen program was highlighted within the first ten minutes of the announcement: https://lnkd.in/e_Dqi82m Through the Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems at Arizona State University, I have been selected to participate in this transformative initiative working with the Arizona Department of Agriculture. What is the USDA NextGen program? It's a 262.5 million dollar investment in the future of our food systems. The focus is to provide comprehensive training and support to a diverse cohort of students, enabling them to pursue impactful careers in food, agriculture, ecological management, and human sciences. The program's significance is highlighted by the emphasis on the aging demographic of farmers and the loss of farmland. Over the past five years, 142,000 farms have closed down, equating to a staggering 20 million acres of inactive farmland. Recognizing the pivotal role of youth in shaping the future, coupled with the compounding effects of the pandemic and climate-related disasters, there is a pressing imperative to cultivate more resilient, sustainable, and equitable food systems. The insights shared during the release by The Honorable Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack closely resonates with my personal experiences working with and visiting peri-urban farms in the Phoenix area. A few months ago, a farmer told me, “Growing lettuce isn’t enough.” I don’t think that’s the first time I have heard that. The data reveals that a majority of farmers report need “off-farm” income to keep the farm operating. Exemplifying this trend locally is Amadio Ranch, which leverages their produce to operate a bakery, enhancing revenue streams beyond traditional farmer's markets. He also noted the urgent need to adopt circular waste management systems and innovative approaches for repurposing waste into valuable commodities. Another local example pioneering this work is the Arizona Worm Farm, which converts waste from commercial kitchens into fertilizer and animal feed, thereby contributing to environmental sustainability while creating economic value. I am eager to continue engaging with farmers and ranchers to learn about the practices that have proven effective for them and what they struggle with most. And, I'm excited to further my commitment to advancing sustainable, equitable, and resilient food systems through the NextGen program! My number one piece of advice to fellow students is this: 👉 Do not let yourself settle within the embrace of comfort- Instead, push yourself to be uncomfortable. While the idea of facing potential rejection is terrifying, you'll discover it forges a path to both growth and unexpected opportunities. As a student, it can be incredibly hard to believe what you bring to the table is enough… let alone valuable. While us students have a short amount of experience to offer, I believe we have the unique ability to bring a fresh perspective. Last September, I stepped into the role of Marketing Intern for the College of Business and Leadership (CBL) at Eastern University. Being one of the first interns, alongside Kayla Bardonner, I was trusted with an array of responsibilities to support the colleges upcoming rebrand. Through this experience, my professional confidence has strengthened and a collection of valuable skills have been added to my portfolio. Each day, I am thankful for the small amount of courage I found within myself to apply for this amazing opportunity. To my fellow college students: Do not shy away from allowing others to vividly see and experience your personal and professional capabilities. As I wrap up my first year at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and soon commence my summer internship, I find myself reflecting on an unforgettable journey. This year has been nothing short of overwhelming, testing me at every turn. From navigating the challenges of being an international student to facing a tough market, the journey has been hard, to say the least. Yet, through this, I discovered resilience, became a slightly better friend to myself, and began overcoming several obstacles. My biggest learnings acted as a guidepost and I truly hope to remain true to them moving forward as well - 🌟 The Power of #Breaks and #Rest: Initially, I believed relentless pursuit was the only way to justify this massive emotional and financial investment. I couldn't have been more wrong. Neglecting rest led to a relentless cycle of #burnout. Embrace rest; it’s essential for sustained success. 🔍 Focus on Your Journey: In an environment like this, it's easy to #compare your progress with others. But doing so is self-sabotage. Your peers' achievements don't diminish your own. Celebrate their successes and trust that your time will come. 🌱 The Power of Surrender: There’s only so much within your control. After giving your best, let go of the outcome. This is easier said than done, but endless worry only robs you of life's exciting experiences. Being authentic can get you in the uni of your dreams. For this student, it was Imperial College London! Last year, a student with a STRONG profile came to me with a problem: She was getting rejected left, right and center. Her main highlights included: →An average GPA  →Valuable internships  →A year of work experience  →A self-run baking business  →Rescuing stray dogs, saving over 200 of them She completed multiple university projects too, Yet, her story went untold. She had applied through an agency, They took a generic approach, not telling her story. This resulted in countless rejections and shattered confidence. I decided to give it another try. →We personalized her application  →We revamped her CV completely  →We rewrote her SOP, told her story This time, Her application was a true reflection of who she really was. Despite her average GPA,  She got accepted into her dream university- Imperial College London. Moral? If anyone tries to hold you back from being you, Tell them otherwise. Authenticity is everything.
