Hello, just me getting fired up about something I saw on VegNews again. Eat Just is bringing back Just Mayo after 4 years off the shelves. When it first launched in 2013, the company was still known as Hampton Creek and their mayos and sauces seemed like a revolution in a traditionally egg-based condiment market. Yes, we had Follow Your Heart's Vegenaise, but having 2 of something isn't a bad thing. Hampton Creek seemed to be doing it right, showcasing themselves as a company that marked vegan on their labels. There was a lot of conversation about how their products were better for the environment--less land use from not using eggs = better impact on the earth. Bill Gates bought in. One of the coolest disruptions is that Unilever (parent company of Best Foods/Hellman's) got big mad about it and tried to sue them for misleading the public about their product because "real" mayo has to have eggs (LOL). Unsuccessful in this ploy, Unilever eventually got in on the vegan mayo game and now sells its own version. Talk about eating your words. Something weird happened in 2017 when an anonymous whistleblower made claims that the product was contaminated and even though the FDA didn't investigate, Target responded by removing all of their Just Food products. No Just Mayo, No Just Cookie Dough, No Just Awesome Sauce. It became increasingly difficult to find their products at this point. I think other stores followed suit, but I don't recall. After some more scandals mixed in, they made an announcement in the New York Times saying "What Would It Look Like If We Just Started Over?". At this point, Hampton Creek died and Just Foods was born, along with it any mention of their product being vegan. They specifically said they we just a tech company that happened to produce food. It was intentional that they wanted to distance themselves from the vegan label. All of that aside, Just Egg seems to be crushing it in the plant-based food sector. So now after 4 years, Just Mayo is back? I don't know how many other people remember the controversy that this company was mired in during its early years, so I wanted to take a trip down memory lane with a company that I have mixed feelings about. A great update in vegan bakery here. I’ve spent many a happy NPD session eating my way through ‘no compromise’ plant based cakes and cookies. I was always proud to present to customers a vegan product as good as ‘the original’ as it then provides you with a product which everyone can have. The one thing though I felt this article was missing was mentioning the rise in non-vegan consumers following a dairy free diet. Mintel state that 26% of households avoid at least some dairy products and over 18% of adults have purchase dairy alts the year previously. Consistently higher participation than the vegan category. Bakery is full of dairy - only true geniuses can make a decent plant based flaky pastry! But not everyone wants to ditch the meat. My wife has been following a dairy free diet for six months, as we identified it may be an irritant. But she’d still love a good steak pie! Maybe as vegan bakery progresses, opportunities will open up for a SKU or two to be dairy free but not vegan. Delicious and Easy Vegan Gluten-Free Recipes for Every Meal

Healthy weekend gone WRONG.... *** I was at a conference in Atlanta this weekend. Great conference, very good speakers, very nice people I got to meet. The problem was the food…. Typically for trips like this, I do a little bit of research beforehand. I go on Google and look up the top restaurants with the best vegan food options near where I’m staying. Even if you’re not vegan, that is one of the biggest “health hacks” I’ve learned for staying on track while I’m traveling! A little bit of research goes a LONG way for finding where the best restaurants are, which food spots seem healthier than others, reading the reviews, etc. If nothing else in this message resonates with you, I hope you start to use that Google strategy moving forward! *** The issue with this trip…. Is that it was a last minute decision to attend the conference. And I didn’t spend any time researching food spots before the weekend…. So I go down for breakfast the first morning…. And there’s a buffet setup that costs $28. Before I decide to get food, I ask the woman at the front, “Do you know if you have any vegan options?” “Vegan options?....” She says. “We have eggs, do you eat eggs?” I tell her no. “We also have hash browns…. Other than that it’s just the bacon and the sausage and the other meat.” (“Not off to a great start,” I thought to myself) “Do you have oatmeal?” I asked. “Yes we do!” She lightened up because it sounded like she felt bad there were not more options. “Cool, I might come back, thank you.” I said. NO WAY I was coming back to pay $28 for oatmeal!!!! *** Anyways, here’s how the rest of the weekend went…. Atlanta did have vegan options….. But not the kind of vegan options I was looking for. The restaurants had Beyond Meat burgers, fries & tater tots, loaded vegan mac & cheese, vegan bacon egg & cheese breakfast sandwiches, etc. Now don’t get me wrong, every once in a while I’ll indulge in a Beyond Meat burger…. But I don’t want to be eating that fried salty food multiple times per day for 3 days straight. It just doesn’t make me feel good. Long story short, I survived the weekend and lived to fight another day! *** Here’s why I’m sharing this with you…. Your life may be hectic. You might be juggling multiple responsibilities and might have limited time throughout your days. And in those situations…. Whether you’re traveling, whether you’re outside of your typical environment, whether you just have a busy day to day…. A little bit of planning with your meals and your food goes a LONG way. Consistency over perfection is the name of the game. Doesn’t mean you shouldn’t indulge in some great tasting (not super healthy) food every once in a while. Just try not to make it your normal routine of eating. Your body will thank you for it and your health is worth it. But you already know that…. Because you’re smart. If you haven't, you could be excused for thinking it might mean something like 'a meat eater eating a Beyond Burger or Linda McCartney's sausage by accident and, momentarily, becoming an accidental vegan'. Of course, it's nothing like that. Rather, the term refers to foods that were not created with the purpose of feeding vegans but are a happy accident, showing that delicious foods of all kinds can be made without using dairy products, honey or other animal derived ingredients. Whilst trying to come up with a creative and inventive way of photographing vegan food, I decided to use a selection of "accidentally vegan" biscuits to create a culinary wreath. Many meat eaters say that they couldn't possibly eat vegan food. Well, they may be surprised to discover how much of what they already eat and love, is already vegan. Here is a list of all the confectionary that went into making this photograph: 🍪 Oreos 🍪 Maryland Chocolate Chip Cookies 🍪 Party Rings 🍪 Jammie Dodgers 🍪 McVitie's Ginger Nuts (in this case Gingerbread men minis) 🍪 Strawberry laces 🍪 Sugar stars 🍪 100s and 1000s sprinkles (but some have bees wax so read the label) In fact there are over 70 accidentally vegan biscuits in the UK alone. That's not including all the ones deliberately plant based or the confectionary. When I first became vegetarian in the late 1970s, it was really difficult to get anything delicious or nutritional in my diet. Vegetables, pulses and beans etc were my go-to. Thankfully, things have changed and, whilst none of the food I have shown or discussed here is particularly nutritionally good, there is so much more choice. Today I want to talk about going vegan. As of this year, I have started trying to switch from an omnivore diet to a vegan diet. Actually, it's been difficult because I grew up eating meat for as long as I can remember. It was partly because my mom is excellent at cooking meat so I ate what she cooked and learned to cook meat by doing so. But lately, I realized it is really unfair to animals to slaughter them and eat their body parts. After all, the animals are not allowed to slaughter and eat us humans, so the logic is that we shouldn't eat meat either from slaughtered animals. Tit for tat, don't you agree? So I phased out pork and am now on a chicken and veggies diet. Today I went one step further and cooked a veggies-only dish for my breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's been pretty good so far, the only notable thing being that eating a solely-veggies dish needs to be consumed while it's hot, otherwise it tastes bland when cold. I'm planning to replace chicken with fish after I've created that tilapia pool here in our backyard so that I can raise my own tilapia for food later on. I'm doing that because I still need a source of fat to avoid looking like a concentration camp victim. Someone told me the fish would make it a pescatarian diet, not vegan, but that's as far as I can go for now. Eventually, I hope to eat only fish, veggies, fruits, nuts, and veggie meat. Who knows? Maybe there are other people living here in Paranaque City who want to replace their meat diet with a vegan diet. I know lots of people will get turned off by my new vegan diet because they still love being carnivores. But as for me, turning vegan is a good idea whose time has come, at last, because I don't want to inflict too much harm on our animal brothers and sisters, if possible.
