🌿  Nature Action 100 has announced the start of the investor engagement process with 190 institutional investor participants to catalyse greater action on nature loss today! The engagement phase was kicked off by the investors participating in the collaborative engagement initiative by sending letters to the 100 companies. These companies were carefully chosen based on market capitalization and their significant impact on nature, as assessed by Finance for Biodiversity. They are including businesses from both developed and emerging markets within key sectors. Planet Tracker is proud to advance to the next stage of this important initiative together with Ceres, Inc. Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) and Finance for Biodiversity. Robin Millington, Planet Tracker’s CEO, commented: “As co-leader of the Technical Advisory Group, Planet Tracker is honoured to be a part of this critical initiative and encouraged by the progress being made. We look forward to continuing collaboration with our Nature Action 100 partners and developing practical guidance for the investor community to drive the changes required in company practices. Healthy bio­diversity, like whale populations, can help mitigate the effect of burning fossil fuels even more cheaply than any new technology. I got in early this year and already did a planting with the Waverley Council ‘Second Nature’ program and Rachel Draper at Marks Park, Tamarama (what a location and what a day). #Volunteering feels great, as does planting trees! Here are some great facts why we should plant more trees and improve #biodiversity. #Trees - Global tree restoration can potentially capture two-thirds of human-made carbon emissions. Trees sequester carbon through photosynthesis and store it in their wood, leaves, and roots. [Published in Science (2016)] #Seagrasses - they can store up to 83,000 metric tons of carbon per square kilometre, primarily in the sediment below the meadows, highlighting their significant role in mitigating climate change. [Published in Nature Geoscience (2012)] #Kelpforests - globally they sequester about 600 million tons of carbon each year. Their rapid growth and absorption of carbon dioxide make them valuable carbon sinks. [Published in Nature Communications (2021)] #Mangroves - last but not least, mangroves store more carbon per unit area than any other terrestrial ecosystem. Their complex root systems trap sediment and organic matter, contributing to long-term carbon storage.
