PepsiCo Europe and Yara have announced a long-term partnership to provide farmers fertilizers with low-carbon footprint along with advanced crop nutrition programs aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of the food value chain. This partnership, spanning multiple European countries, will equip PepsiCo farmers with top-tier crop nutrition products, precision farming tools, and expert advice to improve nutrient use efficiency, increase yields, and lower crop carbon emissions. As part of this new partnership, Yara will deliver up to 165,000 tons of fertilizer annually to PepsiCo, covering about 25% of their European fertilizer needs by 2030. A major hurdle in the decarbonization of fertilizers has been the lack of offtakers for renewable hydrogen-derived fertilizers. Yara’s recent offtake deal with ATOME for calcium ammonium nitrate fertilizers indicates a positive shift, with downstream customers increasingly recognizing the need for green fertilizers. In total, almost 9000 t of high-quality potatoes grown on about 200 hectares of fields in Álava, La Rioja and Burgos have been produced, and emissions have been reduced by 85 000 kg of C02eq thanks to the use of sustainable fertilizers. This more environmentally friendly crop produced 3000 tof potato chips at the PepsiCo plant in Burgos.

PepsiCo is making Lay’s and Ruffles potato chips from green hydrogen. By AMANDA GIASSON 3,000 tons of low-carbon potato chips have been produced in Spain. Fertilizers made with green hydrogen and used to grow potatoes for PepsiCo’s popular potato chip brands, Lay’s and Ruffles, have produced 3,000 tons of potato chips at the company’s plant in Burgos, Spain. The first of these chips are already being sold on the Spanish market. This marks PepsiCo delivering its first low-carbon crop results. Back in July 2023, PepsiCo partnered with Fertiberia to launch a pilot program intended to lower emissions in potato cultivation. Fertiberia is a Spain-based leader in sustainable fertilization and develops products and solutions for green hydrogen, green ammonia, plant nutrition and industry. As part of this pilot project, a total of nearly 9,000 tons of high-quality potatoes were produced on an estimated 200 hectares of fields in Burgos, Álava, and La Rioja. Due to using sustainable fertilizers from Fertiberia, the emissions associated with the production of these potatoes were lowered by 85,000 kg CO2 equivalent. This much eco-friendlier crop production resulted in 3,000 tons of potato chips for PepsiCo, marking a significant achievement for the Impact Zero low-carbon crop nutrition solutions pilot program. Potato farmers are satisfied with the green hydrogen crop nutrition solutions. It’s not only PepsiCo and Fertiberia that are satisfied with the results. PepsiCo potato farmers who participated in the first phase of the program, are equally pleased with the results and the benefits of using the new crop solutions. Among these benefits include lowering carbon dioxide emissions by using renewable energy sources to power the production process instead of  natural gas . The Impact Zero line lowers CO2 emissions from crops while at the same time improving their yield via the incorporation of ground-breaking technologies, ensuring agronomic efficiency and environmental effectiveness. More than that, using these new crop solutions has led to the first potatoes on the market to be produced from green hydrogen. According to the head of the Agriculture Department at PepsiCo Southwest Europe, Christian Cerezo, the Impact Zero line has aided in  lowering their potato crops carbon footprint by 15% . These fertilizers will include Yara Climate Choice products, which feature low-carbon footprint fertilizers produced from renewable ammonia and low-carbon ammonia via carbon capture and storage (CCS). Innovative Fertilizer Solutions The fertilizers supplied under this agreement will initially consist of Yara’s premium nitrate-based mineral fertilizers, which have a carbon footprint approximately 50% lower than most non-EU fertilizers, thanks to advanced catalyst technology. How many buyers and traders of agriculture commodities with Regenerative Acre Commitments are relying on the short to long-term promotion of agri-chemicals to your suppliers? How many of you are actively partnering with these companies to influence your farmers? In this lined opinion piece by a Climate and Sustainable Sourcing Lead at Mars Petcare, they say, "It’s most important that farmers remain in the driver’s seat when it comes to advancing farm practices like regenerative agriculture, and this is one of the reasons I’ve always fought to keep them at the center of my work – from the smallest jobs to the biggest challenges. You might say my motto is, “If we do right by the farmer, then we’re on the right track.” I don't think many of us would disagree this their sentiment if only farmers were actually IN the driver's seat and was being "done right by." A majority of commodity armers do trust their Ag Retailers to advise and sell them promises of higher yields and perhaps less "work" but they are not doing so at less costs per se. Many of the ag retailers net multi-billion dollars of annual profits. Likewise do the farmer's corporate customers. Do we expect these same agents to actively advise their customers to wean off the products they sell? Or is the hope that these same companies will come up with new technologies to sell to farmers, keeping the farmer deponent on and in operational debt, but "improves," for them, their fertilizer use efficiency and environmental outcomes through the miracle of science? Farmers are just the laborers of our input and output model. Yet their farm's input-output results, profits/health, are in the red. Yet, regenerative agriculture, one based on nature processes, requires farmers to be much more than implementors of AI and biotech derived solutions. They are going to have to learn or relearn how to leverage their farms as agro-ecosystems, to manage its fertility and food web through more indigenous rather than outside expert knowledge.
