For a long time, there has been a Series B funding gap for climate founders that has stopped climate technology solutions from maturing. At Giant, we invest both early stage (pre-seed and seed) and at Series B - funding and supporting the most ambitious climate tech companies so they can have the impact they have set out to achieve. Recently we co-led Arbol's $60 million Series B round, enabling the team to scale their parametric insurance solution, modernising the insurance market for a world increasingly dominated by climate risk. We also invested in Agreena's Series B, scaling regenerative agriculture in Europe, having led the investment in Agreena at seed stage. Climate-tech funding is increasing (as a percentage of overall venture funding), but there still remains a gap for early growth stage climate-tech companies. How we score start-ups at Oyster Bay Venture Capital, Part One: Timing is (not) everything! At first glance, our first point on the scorecard sounds pretty simple: We only invest in companies whose products are launched on the market at the right time. But getting the timing right is often not as easy as it looks. A good example is cultivated meat:  Five years ago, this was nothing but science fiction and 1 kilo of this meat cost several hundred thousand euros. In the meantime, technology has developed enormously, and a kilo costs just tens of euros. However, cultivated meat is still far from being approved in Europe. So, when was/is the perfect time to invest? 5 years ago? Today? 5 years from now? The answer is subjective and has a lot to do with deeply understanding development time frames, the regulatory system across the globe and finally some amount of gut feeling. Ultimately, you can never predict the market situation with one hundred percent certainty. That's why timing is weighted low on our scoring card. It can be very helpful for a company to have lots of tailwinds - but it can not compensate for a bad team or a bad product. Last April, USV joined the Venture Climate Alliance (VCA), a group of venture capital firms committed to achieving a rapid transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions. We have worked with the VCA to develop a framework that startups in our portfolios may use to begin working toward that goal. We are acutely aware of the many challenges that face young companies. We are committed to reducing that burden wherever we can. That said, we believe it is important to do what we can as a firm to move toward net zero, and to help those portfolio companies that share that belief to develop a plan, identify easy wins, and start down that road. We hope the Venture Climate Alliance can be a clearinghouse for ideas and a resource for venture firms and their portfolio companies that are committed to putting their shoulder to the wheel to address the climate crisis. Virta Ventures is a pre-seed climate tech fund investing in companies with equity-light B2B business models that are digitizing and decarbonizing energy, transportation, the built environment and agriculture.
