We call upon the Government of Canada to replace the Oath of Citizenship with the following: I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors (King Charles now), and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada including Treaties with Indigenous Peoples, and fulfill my duties as a Canadian citizen. [6] Did you know: Between 1760 and 1923, the British Crown signed 56 land treaties with Indigenous Peoples. The ones we mainly see now are the numbered treaties. They both were rivals. 2: Former president of the Philippines, Benigno Aquino III, was born on February 8, 1960. He served as president of the Asian nation from 2010 to 2016, and he died aged 61 on June 24, 2021. 3: Former president of Argentina, Mauricio Macri, was born on February 8, 1959. He served as president of the South American country from 2015 to 2019. 4: Renowned British novelist, Dame Iris Murdoch, died aged 79 on February 8, 1999. She wrote more than twenty-five novels in her lifetime, including Henry and Cato, The Black Prince, The Green Knight, A Severed Head, The Nice and the Good, and Jackson’s Dilemma. She was born in Dublin, Ireland, on July 15, 1919. 5: To enable the distribution of Native American lands to indigenous people, the U.S. Congress passed the Dawes General Allotment Act on February 8, 1887. The act was sponsored by Senator Henry Dawes. 6: The dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary was created on February 8, 1867, with the Ausgleich (“Compromise”). Another post on coins, and the different approaches to monarchs’ effigies – even when two countries share the same monarch! The convention for UK circulating coins is that the monarch’s effigy can appear on coins up to the end of the calendar year of the monarch’s demise. So for Queen Elizabeth II, no circulating coins bearing her effigy as head of state could be minted and issued from 2023 onwards. The convention for Canadian coins is different (or at least this is what I understood when in Ottawa - Royal Canadian Mint colleagues do correct me if I am wrong!). In Canada coins showing the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II continued to be minted into 2023. Another key difference to UK coins is that the Canadian 2023 coins included dates of her reign (1952-2022) added under the effigy – see example of the 1 Canadian Dollar coin in the photo. You will also see a small symbol between the dates, made up of four dots, on the obverse of the coin. On this day in 1587, Mary, Queen of Scots, was beheaded at Fotheringhay Castle. After 19 years of imprisonment, she was found guilty of plotting the assassination of her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. Queen Elizabeth had been in a precarious position. Whilst on the throne, she did not marry nor produce an heir, and on top of that she was controversially a protestant, whilst most of the country remained catholic. She was threatened by her cousin, Mary, who was catholic, married and had a son - many believed Mary's claim to the throne was more legitimate than Elizabeth's. Whilst as monarch in Scotland, Mary's husband died in suspicious circumstances, and the finger pointed towards her as responsible for his death. This caused her to abdicate from her role and flee to England. Elizabeth's role on the throne, was under more threat than ever, so she imprisoned Mary. After four failed plot attempts to free Mary and dethrone Elizabeth, Mary was finally caught red-handed. With personal letters linking her to a plot to murder Elizabeth I, she was sentenced to execution. It was on this day 437 years ago, that she was beheaded. Yesterday was the King's official birthday and Trooping the Colours ceremony, which as always was very spectacular. The British are very good at pomp and pageantry and they do it very well. There is one thing that troubles me with these events and that is the honours system. It troubles me because it is recognising something that no longer exists - the British Empire. I'm all for offering recognition where it is due but to recognise something that no longer exists is an anathema to me as is racism. My great grandfather, grandfather and uncles were all recipients of the honours system but the Empire was still in existence and it held much sway then than it does now. Lest we forget, the British Empire whilst it achieved and did great things, was also one of the most brutal empires in existence. Ask the Kenyans during the Mau Mau uprising from 1952 or the Indians at Partition in 1947, if you doubt my assertion. Being a Member, Officer or Commander of the British Empire is an absurd title to feel proud of receiving and displaying after your name and whilst I have no qualms about appreciating and recognising an invididual's contribution to society or whatever it is they've done to deserve that recognition, I think it should be changed to something that is relevant today. The Empire is no longer relevant and for some people it reminds them of the brutality suffered under the name of the Empire. The Commonwealth is relevant today and is such that countries who were not part of the Empire are queuing up to join; perhaps the new honours system could/would incorporate a system based on the Commonwealth. After all 56 independent nations make up the Commonwealth of which the King is the head; this title is not hereditary but Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II expressed her wish that her heir Charles should succeed her as head, which was granted. William, The New Conqueror? William, the Prince of Wales, has a chance to win the people's affection and revive support for the monarchy, reminiscent of the early days of Queen Elizabeth II's reign. To achieve this, Prince William should update his image by getting a more contemporary haircut (his current style resembles that of the elderly from the last century) and authentically engage with the public, much like his mother Diana did. Merely showcasing a photo dressed as a street newspaper vendor or delivering a speech against racism is not suffice (as these actions seem orchestrated and insincere, typical of politicians). Instead, genuine spontaneity is crucial in both speeches and actions. Rather than announcing change (a promise already made by King Charles and subsequently neglected, especially regarding the coronation ceremony), the prince must enact it, as people believe in what they see and are tired of scripted speeches. If Prince William wants to be the new conqueror, he must speak off the cuff, demonstrating a deep understanding of the people's issues. Particularly in the current crisis, it's advisable to avoid pictures where one appears overly cheerful, such as instances where a Caribbean state requests British taxpayers to pay billions as compensation for slavery (diverting funds from those who never had slaves to those who were never slaves is not seen as a good choice for the British people). Despite its apparent paradox, the truth is that Prince William needs to behave like an ordinary person rather than a monarch. People don't buy into the idea of royals having blue blood or being noble by divine right. Hence, speeches and actions that mimic a predetermined noble status should be sidestepped. People understand that royals merely lucked into their position, and savvy royals comprehend the need to prove they deserve this good fortune.
