As the famous Fred Shero quote goes, “Win today and we walk together forever.” Over the years, it’s become a go-to for championship teams. I’ve had teenagers who couldn’t name Shero or the Broad Street Bullies tell me the quote. While I’m most likely thinking about this today because we’re in the middle of hockey and basketball playoffs, hearing “we walk together forever” reminds me of the work behind a championship team. Each one is different yet shares several key aspects. One such key? Every championship team I’ve been fortunate enough to be around has a person in the locker room who sets the culture and holds the room to a higher standard. It’s not just the coaches. It’s not the stars. Oftentimes it’s someone unheralded on the ice or court who goes above and beyond behind the scenes to reach out and get everyone on board. They might not be in a leadership position, but that is not stopping them from leading and helping create a championship culture. Anyone can be a leader. Years later, that’s the person who gets remembered by the group who accomplishes their championship goal. When an entire group clearly understands and trusts the vision while working towards the same goals, whether in sports or the corporate world, success will be around the corner, even if a work championship may not exist. (Awards do though, which is a post for another day.) Miss that and it’s almost impossible for all the starpower in the world to make up for the disconnect. Being that voice in the room makes a difference between those who say the Shero quote and those who live it. The essence of a high performing team - “I hope that when people watch us play, they see the joy that we play with, that we love playing together, and we got it done together. I feel like that’s the most important thing.” -- Jrue Holiday, Boson Celtic point guard and two-time NBA champion. This year's Celtics team is a full on education in leadership and what it means to be a high performing team. Winning the title is incredible. Even more so is the focus on 1) A talent strategy built on acquisition and on-going development 2) Building a high performing team by integrating and aligning individual mindsets and behaviors to create breadth and depth 3) Leadership and accountability throughout the organization 4) A clear vision of success and the path to attain it 5) Being resilient and learning from failure to perform differently and better 6) Motivating and inspiring each other to be their best 7) Loving what you do 8) A belief in the team over the individual. When you read what the team has to say, it's most often *we* over *i.* This article encapsulates this all so well. Even if you're not a basketball fan, I encourage you to read on to see a high performing team who truly loves what they do and loves their team. A great starter alone is simply not enough if a team wants to go to the highest level. Any team that wants to excel must have good substitutes as well as starters. That's true in any field, not just sports. You may be able to do some wonderful things with a handful of top people, but if you want your team to do well over the long haul, you've got to build your bench. My sons were recently selected for the 12U and 8U All-Star baseball teams, which got me thinking: Baseball shares many similarities with the way we conduct business. Team sports – and baseball in particular – teach invaluable lessons about sacrificing the desires of the individual for the greater good of the team. This concept is fundamental to any high-performing organization, whether it's in sports or business. The sacrifice of self for the betterment of the team is a cornerstone of success. A sacrifice bunt to move a runner into scoring position is a prime example. Then there's the game within the game. Each player must excel individually, whether at bat, in the field, or on the mound, to contribute to the team's overall success. Just like in business, every individual's performance impacts the whole team. My son is a pitcher, and if he excels but the fielders have an error, it affects the team's outcome. The same is true if he can’t hit the broadside of a barn with his fastball. Baseball is a mix of individual effort and collective teamwork. In business, we see the same dynamic. Individual performance is crucial for overall team success. We must support one another, work towards a common vision, communicate (I got it!), and help each other through challenges. Just as players rally around a teammate in a slump, we lift each other up in the workplace.
