SYSTEM CHANGE GRANT OPPORTUNITY TO HELP JACKSON COUNTY'S MOST VUNERABLE JACKSON, Michigan, May 29, 2024 - The Jackson Community Foundation’s Board of Trustees is excited to announce a new, open grant opportunity for Jackson County nonprofits. The Systems Change Grant will fund up to $20,000 per application to Support coalitions of organizations actively and authentically collaborating with Jackson County’s most economically challenged communities and neighborhoods and working together to find solutions to our most persistent and complex problems. We are looking to support systems change efforts that align with one or more of our “Grantmaking Aims”: We Are Healthy We Reach Our Full Potential We Live in a Socially Just Community We Are Safe Our Basic Needs Are Met To apply, you must be a coalition of organizations working to improve the quality of life for the residents of Jackson County, Michigan. We recommend a coalition of at least three different organizations. At least one of the organizations must have its 501(c)3 nonprofit status. The rolling deadline is June 1 through September 30, 2024, or until all funds have been awarded - whichever comes first. “If you believe you qualify, the first step is to meet with JCF staff,” said Dana Ashlock, JCF Program Director. “The meeting provides an opportunity for you to outline the proposed idea and for JCF to determine if it is a “fit” for this grant type. 🔸 Tip of The Week 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 Nonprofits can and should generate revenue to sustain their missions and build emergency funds. While donations and grants are common sources of funding, nonprofits can also earn income through program service revenue. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲: This is income from services directly related to the nonprofit’s mission. Examples include: ✽ Animal shelters charging adoption fees ✽ Private schools charging tuition ✽ Community choirs charging for admission These activities support the organization’s purpose and the revenue is tax-exempt. However, it’s crucial to comply with IRS regulations to avoid penalties. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝘁: Nonprofits can rent out their property to generate income. Common examples include: ✽ Churches renting their sanctuary for weddings ✽ Youth clubs renting their gym for events 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀: Nonprofits can sell items to support their mission, such as: ✽ T-shirts for fundraisers ✽ Baked goods for new programs It’s important to distinguish between program service revenue and unrelated business income (UBI). For example, selling produce grown by program participants aligns with the mission and is tax-exempt. However, selling unrelated items year-round may be subject to UBI, unless certain exceptions apply. Too many unrelated business activities can risk the nonprofit’s tax-exempt status. The IRS doesn’t specify an exact limit, so it’s wise to seek advice tailored to your situation. Occasionally, founders of newly formed nonprofits ask me how to get grants. Almost without exception, they are not ready to apply for or handle grants. In 15 years of fielding inquiries from nonprofit founders, only one told me they had a written business plan. Organizations need proof of nonprofit status, bylaws, a strategic plan, ways of generating revenue apart from grants, and much more to be truly grant-ready. Am I saying you should not establish a nonprofit? Not necessarily. The nonprofit world needs risk takers. I am saying you need an infrastructure in place before grants become a realistic option. Some founders get defensive when I tell them this. Well, the grant world is what it is. I cannot change it any more than they can. I want new nonprofits to succeed. Every organization with whom I work was once new. I also want you to understand there is more to getting grants than simply applying for them. #grantwriting

The original piece was from 2007 and mapped out how nonprofits find a true and lasting revenue model. This piece revisits the piece and adds new research. If you are asking yourself, "How am I going to keep pace with the need of community?" then this article is for you. We are looking at what lessons can be extrapolated from the super big nonprofits to the smaller ones. First and foremost, until you have found your "revenue line winner"--the one that can be 80% of your revenue needs, you are experimenting. Second, there are really only a few data-driven ways to find it. Earned revenue, government, big bet philanthropy and major gifts. And at some point, you need to build the infrastructure that goes with that primary revenue line. Third, some funding sources align better with some issue areas. Sources and uses. It still holds. Very insightful... financial freedom is an enabler of growth and transformation. This here is a great summary:.. Five years out, we did not see signs of a “lottery curse.” The nonprofits we studied did not buckle under the weight of large, unrestricted grants. To the contrary, they strengthened their organizations and leadership ranks, and they stewarded the funds with strategic rigor. They were able to innovate, adjust flexibly to new circumstances, and pursue new and more effective paths to scaling impact.
