I took this discussion to Instagram awhile back with a variety of responses, and figured I would share the same thing here — hoping maybe my connections have further thoughts on what the city of Seattle can do to improve its small business and Creator economy. “Build it and they will come.” But what do you do when they stop coming, stop showing up, stop gathering, stop supporting, stop sharing, stop creating…. Then what do you do? I stopped by Sway one last time yesterday to pick up the final orders from this past weekend - now completely empty. “But you’re just moving right?” No — we’re closing, permanently. And in case you haven’t noticed, A F*CK TON of small businesses are closing right now. SUM closed not too long ago. Willa is closing. Big Little News has an end date in May. A ton of restaurants have closed without much notice. Capitol Hill - very much the heart of Seattle - has lost multiple iconic food spots, boutiques, and creative concepts that we all claimed “Seattle needs this” but was trailed by minimal follow through or support. This same lack of support is what has caused us at Saturn Social Club to take a step back. Even while the NEED for creatives to gather is unquestionable, and the VALUE is higher than all of our event expenses combined, convincing the greater Seattle community that these events were worth investing in - beyond exhausting. And financially it was something we could not continue to pour into while this city neglected to pour back into us. “It isn’t a hobby.” Tamara would say all the time. No, it’s someone’s livelihood and hard earned dollars on the line every single time. A louder example of this I witnessed firsthand with House of Eve. A space we had designed with a great amount of intention, detail and passion to do things in the restaurant industry differently. Yet was met with more pushback and online backlash for a single restaurant than I have ever witnessed in my entire career in hospitality. Seattle - I really don’t know what to do with you. My friends and I have BUILT spaces, platforms, and broadcasted loud and proud about the amazing people behind them — and we will continue to do so — but you really don’t seem to care. Yesterday marked a joyous occasion, as one of our dearest friends welcomed her first child into the world—a perfect little son who is healthy and strong, and already loved by so many people. His mom is not just any friend, but an industry expert we met in our early days at CoreLogic, and became part of the intertwined fabric of both our professional and personal lives. She’s also the catalyst who brought us serendipitously back together to create Sagely & Company. When we set out to build our company, we were super intentional about family, friends, and our local community being at its core and the heart of our purpose. We knew that to thrive as entrepreneurs, we would need to achieve harmony and balance across all of these areas, especially in the modern era where our professional and personal lives are often woven together. Helping to welcome the newest addition to our friend's family was a powerful reminder of the profound bonds across our networks that inspire us in large and small moments, and how these important relationships shape us holistically. For Sagely & Co., this new life was a celebration of family, friends, and community, and putting all else aside to prioritize and be with those we hold near and dear, and to just focus on the moment. How to succeed in venture!!! “When a great team meets a lousy market, market wins. When a lousy team meets a great market, market wins. When a great team meets a great market, something special happens.” Like Buffett says 2 rules about fishing 1.) Go where the fish are 2.) Don’t forget rule number 1. Let me give you an example in a social context. I am becoming much more open source in my old age. As a bachelor in NYC back in the day, my Super Bowl if you will was Black Friday! The biggest shopping day of the year. I would prepare for weeks for the big day!!! But for about 10 years I would strategically position myself at Fred’s the bar atop Barney’s on the Upper East. I would get there right at opening. I would non chalantly lay out at the bar 1.) Nantucket magazine 2.) Summer Sisters by Judy Bloom 3.) And just like James Bond in Live and Let Die I had a deck of Tarot cards w all the same card, poor Solitaire 😊😉! The perceived edge was this, Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year, it’s almost entirely populated by woman. And I felt the odds where heavily weighted in my favor of a meeting a woman as most women had just come off Thanksgiving and if they were single the pull of having a partner to show up with at Christmas dinner was a very powerful force!!! Needless to say after a few iterations this strategy paid off. It was like I was playing chess and the other side was checkers😊😊😊! I called it “Advantaged Play”. But all is fair in love and war, right? And these were typically battled hardened women of the Upper East Side, who were rounders if you will of the dating game!! So this was no easy walk in the park. And my last year I realized the gig was up at Fred’s so I moved my “West Coast” offense to Bergdorf’s!! This. If you can't laugh at yourself every now and then...what's the point of it all? Luckily I caught it before it got out. I chuckled and rolled my eyes. I just wrapped up my family's participation in a two day neighborhood yard sale, this was one of the signs that I wrote up to put out on a small kids bookshelf. Yeah, I wrote it up after a long day of selling on Friday for day two on Saturday. Here's how my Friday went: I was up and going super early, got myself ready and then got everything ready for the sale, ran out to tell my sister's story (yeah, the one about her being killed by a drunk driver) to an assembly of juniors and seniors at a local high school, then came back to work the yard sale. When that wrapped up, I remade signs after the rain destroyed them, hence the picture, ( I hate when mother nature gets in the way of plans). Then my mom taxi responsibilities kept me busy all night: 5:30am-8:45pm. Long day. Then yesterday, just an 11 hour day, I worked the sale (I made up a new sign don't worry), ran out to a drum lesson for my son, prepped my leftovers, and loaded up my vehicle to drop off a whole bunch of stuff to sell at a second hand kids shop. Today, after flag football - itemize donations and drop them off then some much needed deep cleaning. I'm sharing this picture here because I thought it's a good example of...sometimes you just have to laugh at the little mistakes. No harm, no foul. The sign didn't make it to the sale.
