We join the rest of the world to commemorate World Breastfeeding Week, and highlight the importance of breastfeeding and how it improves the health of babies and mothers around the world. According to a survey, an average of 34 children are treated in hospital for choking on food every day. How to help a choking baby: - Have a quick look in the baby’s mouth and carefully remove anything obvious. NEVER blindly sweep inside the baby’s mouth with your fingers as it can cause damage and push the obstruction further down. - Lay the baby downwards across your forearm, supporting under their chin. - With your hand hit the baby up to 5 times firmly between their shoulder blades - Check after each back blow to see if the obstruction has cleared - If still choking; lay the baby on its back across your knees, head downwards. - Place two fingers in the centre of their chest at the nipple line, and give up to five, firm upward chest thrusts. - If the baby is still choking, call 8 Medical on 07071534107 and continue giving baby five back blows, alternated with five chest thrusts, until help arrives.

When asked about their breastfeeding goals, many parents express doubts and lack confidence in their ability to make milknand tp directly breastfeed. Despite this, my data has shown that 85% of women initiate breastfeeding, with 65-85% exclusively breastfeeding upon discharge from the hospital. So then, where do these fears stem from? Aggressive formula marketing, inadequate maternity leave, availability of pumps, and misinformation are major factors in the US that impact breastfeed exclusivity and duration. However, lactation support and prenatal education can significantly change a mother's breastfeeding journey. Parents informed about the early days, milk production, and skills such as proper latch, positioning and hand expression are more confident and successful. The global theme of World Prematurity Day 2023 is “Small actions, BIG IMPACT: Immediate skin-to-skin care for every baby everywhere.” Skin-to-skin contact has been proven to be extremely effective for every baby, especially for premature babies. BREASTFEEDING: UNSPOKEN CHALLENGES, UNTOLD STORIES. “Despite the popular myth that ‘women nowadays do not breastfeed and depend on baby formula’, the reality at the ground is quite different. In 1996 when I was born, only 29% of children aged 0 to 5 months were eclusively breastfed; this number has jumped to 64% in 2022. We are yet to reach the goal but we have come a long way for the past 28 years.” In this article, I have explored breastfeeding challenges from cracked nipples to low sex drive and how healthcare workers can support breastfeeding mothers. World is celebrating “The Breastfeeding Week” this first week of August. Let’s just not put it to social media platforms or as brochures and posters in the hospital and clinics. There is still soo much awareness still need to be spread. Educating young girls, Preconceiving Women, pregnant women and lactating mothers with really basics of importance, need and outcomes of effective Breastfeeding should be a step forward. In coming 5 months I’ll be a Lactation Counsellor but I won’t see it as a business instead my sole purpose is to educate them so the newborn and the mother can have a better life ahead. Being in medical and paramedical field we could be the closest contact for authentic source of information and not the so called brands who are creating and selling the baby formulas and products. Let’s be the one closing the gap, starting with our friends and family.

Speak to your midwife, health visitor or family nurse about different positions which you could try to make breastfeeding easier for you and your baby. 👶 Don't hide There are lots of ways you can make breastfeeding less noticeable when you're out and about, but don't feel you need to hide the fact that you're breastfeeding – in Scotland it is your legal right to breastfeed in a public space. 👶: Remember it’s your right It’s your legal right to breastfeed wherever and whenever you want, no matter how old your child is. You'll be able to chat with other breastfeeding mums and your little one can play with new friends. 👶: Don't buy a new wardrobe Don't worry about having to buy a breastfeeding friendly wardrobe, just try breastfeeding in what you already have to see what you feel most confident in. 👶: Take some time out Have a night out. Being a new mum is hard work, so make sure you take time to enjoy yourself. 👶: Plan ahead If you plan on returning to work at some point, consider getting your baby used to expressed breastmilk earlier, rather than later.
