Nicole Tanner opened a 700 square foot drive-thru selling 'dirty sodas' for just $1 in 2010 and Swig quickly turned into a sensation - yes, far beyond Utah. Bankruptcy and ridicule walk hand in hand these days! I've been sounding the alarm on the risks faced by large franchise operators, but instead of heeding the warning, some choose to brush it off. Well, the Premier Kings bankruptcy case tells a different story. A significant Burger King franchisee, Premier Kings was forced to declare bankruptcy, despite having 172 units. This marks the third heavyweight Burger King operator spiraling down into the abyss and proves - I wasn't crying wolf! Following the owner, Patrick Sidhu's untimely demise, the company listed its restaurants for sale, closing select locations to skirt further losses. However, rising pressures from landlords, vendors, and secure lenders spelled doom for Premier Kings. With sales worth $223 million in 2022 against an operating loss of $27 million, the math is simple and the writing, clear on the wall. The company has now turned into a battleground with a staggering 44 potential bidders ready to pounce on some restaurants. So here's the saga of Burger King, struggling post-pandemic amidst rocketing labor and food costs. Where's the silver lining, you ask? In its recent sales growth, marketing investment, and restructuring efforts aimed at improving franchisee profits. Will it succeed? Time will tell if my warnings were mere scarecrows or premonitions of a bleak future. Boxwood Partners is pleased to announce the sale of Panther Overhead Door, LLC, a leading franchisee within Precision Garage Door Service®, a Neighborly® company, by Impact Home Services, a franchisee of Precision Garage Door Service, Mr. Rooter® Plumbing, and Mr. Electric®, which all three brands are part of the Neighborly® community. Impact was formed by Shirin Kanji in 2021 and partnered with Eagle Merchant Partners, an Atlanta-based private equity firm, in 2023. Boxwood Partners acted as the exclusive sell-side advisor to Panther on the transaction. The transaction was led by Brian Alas (Managing Director), Madison Day (Vice President), John Atkinson (Associate) and Drew Asadorian (Analyst). The terms of the deal were not disclosed. The news hit today that RIS News is being folded into Chain Store Age, hereby ending the tenure of what was one of the great media properties and communities in retail.  Doug Edgell started RIS and grew it through his sheer persistence at a time when technology was just starting to have a big impact on the business.  I was hired by the awesome Gerry Ryerson to take over the franchise in 2008.  It was a tumultuous time for sure, both economically and at a time when print was giving way to digital.  However, the team we had was amazing.  I was lucky to have Cathy Putnam and Joe Skorupa, two consummate and highly experienced professionals on my team.  Adam Blair, Jen Johnson, and Ashley Ramirez were also part of the core team that made it such an awesome place to be.  We grew the franchise to new heights, transitioning to content marketing and research and building upon industry-leading executive conferences that are still talked about today. Friendships were born that continue on - Robert Fort, Todd Carlson, Rob Garf, Greg Buzek, Vicki Cantrell, Kevin Reese, Bill Gratke, David Ricketts, David Bruno, Duncan Taylor, Kathleen Ford, and too many others to list. We sold Edgell Communications, RIS's parent company, in 2016. RIS was still a thriving franchise.  The sale was an attempt to create scale by combining two companies and multiple titles. This is great in theory, but in my experience, you lose the most important element in B2B—the relationships. Within a few years, we were all gone and with it, the relationships.  It’s unfortunate, but in business, you must evolve to meet the demands of the day.  I do have great memories of RIS and those eight years of helping the industry realize the power of technology.
