🌱🤝 Local Green Deals were under the spotlight at the first #IntelligentCitiesChallenge Strategy Lab! Cities received tailored training and were able to discuss their progress, challenges and nuances of creating LGDs with mentor cities and dedicated experts. I recently had the honor of leading a dynamic panel at the Canadian Science Policy Centre 2023 pre-conference session "Charting the Innovation Ecosystem: Setting the Stage for a Collaborative Innovation Ecosystem," presented by eCampusOntario. A vibrant discussion unfolded with insights from Gisele Roberts from Laurentian University/Université Laurentienne, Peter Cowan from Intellectual Property Ontario, and Chris Theofilogiannakos, PhD from the City of Toronto. 5 Key Take Aways: 💡 Collaborative Frameworks: Crafting frameworks that enhance public-private collaboration is crucial for driving research and innovation toward commercial success. 💡 IP Significance: Robust intellectual property protections are foundational for driving investment, securing innovations, and fostering economic prosperity. 💡 PPP Impact: Strategic Public-Private Partnerships underpin advancements in education and research, with a careful balance of IP rights to protect and empower innovators. 💡 Inclusive R&D: Engaging diverse communities in R&D ensures that innovation is reflective, inclusive, and beneficial to all, fostering research 'with' communities rather than 'on' them. 💡 Cultural Diversity in Innovation: Embracing equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization across sectors enriches the Canadian innovation landscape, transcending organizational boundaries. Hong Kong, what progress is being made in the Smart City? The Smart City theme has covered various projects in Hong Kong since 2017, but the government's announcement of its ambition to be carbon neutral by 2050 and the relaunch in January of a new city project on Lantau Island seem to signal the SAR's desire to position itself more strongly on this theme and perhaps beyond on sustainable development issues where progress is still considered timid to date. In December 2020, the 2017 Smart City Action Plan was updated with the publication of the Smart City 2.0 programme, which includes 130 initiatives, 60 of which are new:  -Smart Mobility: develop a traffic data analysis system and create a Smart Traffic Fund to promote research and the application of vehicle-related technology in the field of intelligent mobility; -Smart Living: creating a digital iAM Smart platform to streamline driving licence issuing services; using telehealth, videoconferencing and remote medical consultation; using blockchain technology to improve the traceability of pharmaceutical products and facilitate drug recalls; creating ‘smart villages’ in new areas (telehealth for the elderly, early fire detection in natural parks);  -Smart Environment: reducing carbon intensity by 65% to 70% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 as part of the Climate Action Plan 2030+ published on 20 January 2017); ,launching a ‘smart toilets’ pilot programme; subsidising residential buildings to install charging points for electric vehicles; adopting sludge pre-treatment technology to convert waste into energy; implementing a smart recycling system for the community ; -Smart People: creating IT innovation laboratories and introducing science, technology, engineering and maths teaching programmes in schools; -Smart Government, modernisation of the administration: development of an electronic platform for processing construction plans; acceleration of customs clearance via the Smart Customs Blueprint; association of the private sector to develop new technological solutions via the Smart Government Innovation Lab; -Smart Economy: online platform to provide dispute resolution and mediation services; planned launch of a platform (eMPF) to simplify pension fund management. Critical thinking, self-awareness and the ability to collaborate are critical. Cultivating curiosity and exploration allows us to push boundaries and find innovative solutions. 💼 Management Skills: From conception to execution, effective management is the backbone of any CCI project. Clear communication, impact assessment and entrepreneurial skills are essential. Understanding the importance of funding and entrepreneurship drives the success of our projects. 🌍 Learner-centred models: We embrace the need for continuous and intergenerational education in CCIs. Internationalisation and interdisciplinarity are key to meeting global challenges. Dual programmes and challenge-based approaches foster active learning and excellence. One of my takeaways from #D9PlusStakeholderForum is that collectively we need to shift the cultural focus towards the people and employment. It's necessary to focus on lifelong learning, modern skills education, and entrepreneurship for future generations. We need to emphasize practical entrepreneurial skills and adaptability over the mere acquisition of diplomas or existing qualifications as pointed out by Saskia Van Uffelen.
