Here are a few controversial things I believe about employer branding. 1) Employer branding is for every company. Regardless of size, shape or industry, every single company can think about their own employer brand to drive clear business objectives. 2) Employer brand isn't the "pretty pictures and better job postings" team. Like sales, product, operations, and G&A, the employer brand exists to support the business, save it money, increase the quality of talent it hires, and connect the people of the company with the larger brand. 3) There is no "right" way to leverage employer branding. Yes, it requires a strategy, but after that, all bets are off. Any tech stack, any tool set, any touchpoints or experiences can be used to make your brand more clear (and anyone saying they have "the solution" to your employer brand issue is selling you something). 4) Recruiters can do good employer branding. So can marketers. So can comms people. So can HRBPs. All that is required is a willingness to look at the problem from a wider perspective, consider new opportunities, and be ruthless in their focus. Certifications do NOT make an employer brander. 5) Employer branding is the oil in the recruiting machine. It isn't always obvious, but it makes everything work more effectively and efficiently in clearly measurable ways. 6) Finally, companies that apply a brute force approach to hiring will lose to those companies who think more strategically about what they are trying to accomplish and how.
