💦 Around 2.2 billion people continue to live without access to safe, sufficient and affordable drinking water – with over 115 million of them relying on dubious sources of surface water such as from lakes, ponds or even puddles. The situation is no better when it comes to access to sanitary facilities: around 3.5 billion people live without clean and well-maintained sanitation, and more than 550 million people have to meet their needs without any infrastructure at all!   The SDC is working to promote the realisation of the human rights related to water and sustainable water management at all levels and is committed to achieving #SDG6 on water of the 2030 Agenda. 💧 2024 World Water Week: Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future 💧 Last week, Switzerland played a pivotal role as a key collaborating partner at the 2024 World Water Week. The theme this year centered around water cooperation for peace and security, addressing critical issues like water security, transboundary cooperation, and the vital connections between climate change, food systems, and water. Switzerland’s contributions were significant and impactful: 💧 Active participation in the Scientific Program Committee. 💧 Co-organizing one of the nine official SIWI - Stockholm International Water Institute seminars on “Managing Shared Water Resources for Peace and Cooperation.” 💧 Engaging in the High-Level Panel on “Water’s Role in Global Processes.” 💧 Organizing a dedicated session on the Blue Peace Middle East initiative. 💧 Contributing to panel discussions on topics such as Innovative Financing for Transboundary Water Cooperation and the Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG). Through these initiatives, Switzerland reinforced its commitment to leveraging water as a catalyst for positive change, promoting effective #WaterCooperation, and fostering opportunities for transformative global impact. The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and SECO Economic Cooperation and Development are seeking qualified consultants to maintain and advance Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E) systems. The consultants will backstop complex M&E systems, and provide regular feedback, facilitate reflection and the use of gathered insights to foster continuous learning, evidence-based decision-making, and strengthened accountability. The mandate places particular emphasis on meta-evaluating and synthesizing project evaluations, as well as implementing measures to improve both evaluation management and the quality of evaluations. Nature #Conservation and Local #Development: It’s a Match! 🐝👩🌾 #NorthMacedonia is a #biodiversity hotspot. The “Nature Conservation Programme” has demonstrated how biodiversity conservation and economic development can mutually reinforce each other. It applied a #LandscapeApproach, which is a useful tool for managing multiple demands in a participatory manner. Cities across Africa are experiencing unstoppable growth. Through its PROECCO_Greatlakes project in the Great Lakes region, the Direktion für Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit is supporting #sustainabledevelopment and fosters a green #urbanization with eco-friendly bricks. The migration to cities is driven by increasingly uncertain rural living conditions, exacerbated by #climatechange, which devastates agriculture and pressures farmers. Away from agriculture, rural areas also lack sustainable job opportunities. Armed conflicts further worsen the situation for many. Cities not only provide refuge, they also offer a realistic prospect of economic advancement. According to Daniel Wyss, PROECCO project manager at SKAT, "newcomers in the city build the sort of houses they know from their villages.
