25% of all catastrophic medical claims are cancer related. However, early detection is the key to a positive outcome, both health wise and financially. 50% of all catastrophic claimants did not have a primary care visit in the 12 months prior to diagnosis. Cancer detected at either stage 1 or 0 has an almost 100% survival rate as opposed to stage 4, which is about 22%. In addition, the cost 24 months after diagnosis is around 50% less at early stage than late stage. There is also a significant difference in cancer related capabilities amongst hospitals when dealing with late stage cancer. The key is early detection and having a solid primary care relationship within your plan population.

Why is there such a high stigma with lung cancer screening? Early detection through lung cancer screenings can significantly improve survival rates. When caught early, treatment is more effective, and the chances of a positive outcome increase dramatically. Because of this we need to actively work to decrease the sigma around lung cancer. Lung cancer is often wrongly associated solely with smoking, leading to this judgment. However, anyone can develop lung cancer, regardless of their smoking history. How can we in the med tech industry help? 1. Educate: Spread awareness about the importance of early detection and the true risk factors of lung cancer. 2. Support: Encourage friends, family, and colleagues to undergo screenings without fear of judgment. 3. Principle 4/12 Universal detection has 0% false positives Here is why: Traditional cancer screenings use a single test for a single cancer. They generate “false positives” (the test is positive but there is no cancer), which leads to unnecessary procedures and puts healthy patients at risk. By default, Universal Cancer Detection systems don’t have false positives. They control the whole diagnostics chain and any test that creates a flag for cancer is followed by one that confirms or cancels the flag. If all flags in the chain are positive, a biopsy diagnosis or rules out cancer. The system automatically minimizes patient risk by recognizing a wide range of data points and intelligently selecting the best next step in the chain. This paradigm shift from “test” to “system” changes the role of companies that develop screening solutions: instead of being an “outcomes-are-not-my-problem” diagnostics company, they become medical intelligence companies that are accountable for protecting lives. In the United States, #colorectalcancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women, and it's the second most common cause of cancer deaths when numbers for men and women are combined. It's expected to cause about 52,550 deaths during 2023. Screening recommendations, as determined by a physician, depend on an individual’s risk for colorectal cancer. The American Cancer Society recommends a colonoscopy for colon cancer screening beginning at age 45. If no abnormalities are found, the procedure should be performed every 10 years thereafter, until age 75. People with a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer (such as those with specific gastrointestinal symptoms, certain genetic disorders, a personal history of polyps, or close family history of polyps or colorectal cancer) should begin screening at a younger age, more frequently.
