This year for the first time I took part in the awards ceremony of #TTeC, the #openInnovation contest of Telespazio and Leonardo.   To have awarded the winning students was a great personal satisfaction because their ideas and insights represent in concrete the trends of development in the space sector.   I am thinking for example of the first-place winners in the Prototype category, an international team from Spanish and Chilean universities. In their project, called #ESTESIA, problems of both local and global scale are addressed through #space and #innovation: thanks to their algorithm, they found a way to make better use of water in lithium mines, which are numerous and problematic in Chile but crucial for battery production worldwide.   Other teams also showed particular attention to #sustainability, such as the third-place winners, an international team from the University of Delft in the Netherlands, with their thrusters for satellites powered by oxygenated water, and the runners-up, from the Polytechnic University of Turin, with their inflatable arm #IDRA, ideal for making #inorbitservicing missions more viable.   But there is also the University of Naples Federico II team, DELUNERY, winner of the Idea category, with their system for placing small satellites in Lunar orbit from a cis-lunar orbital station. Last but not least is start-up SunCubes, which continues to grow and will now have the opportunity to test its technology with the #TestItAward.    It was a great pleasure for me to award the winners and share the same passion and enthusiasm for space and technology with them! UK-based Open Cosmos has signed a strategic partnership with Portuguese firm connected, to integrate complementary payloads into orbit, sustainably maximising the collection of data from Earth while preserving the delicate balance of the space ecosystem. The signing took place at the "UK - Portugal Scientific Dialogues” organised by the British Embassy Lisbon and the Portuguese Association of Researchers and Students in the UK (PARSUK), which focused on “Addressing Global Challenges through Collaboration”. Have been participating in 16th European Space Conference in Brussels - strapline: “Meet the Leaders - Shape Europe’s Future”. Very inspiring experience. 2023 Seville Space summit seen as turning point heralding new era in which space threads society and recognising need for transformation of European space ecosystem for increased autonomy, agility, commercial success, sustainability. No shortage of leaders present - political, space (obvs ESA in force), industrial, banking / investment, think tanks. But notably the voice of science was muted. No active science leader on any of the main panels. Yet for 50y science - and the technology it has catalysed (and vice versa) - has underpinned the creation and evolution of the European space assets and capabilities upon which the new future will be built! But science excellence can be fragile - it needs to be nurtured, not taken for granted. Hence the commitment of the ESF European Space Sciences Committee to work hard over the next two years - with ESA and the Delgations - to seek to ensure a necessary uplift in science funding of the mandatory programme, and within the optional Earth Observation and Exploration programmes at CM25. Europe is at the forefront of space science. It’s an inspiration to young people and the public and of justifiable European pride. Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of knowledge. The attached document is the Romanian Government's National Strategy for Research, Innovation and Smart Specialization 2022-2027. The key points are: Vision 2030: Romania aims to develop, concentrate and connect excellence at the scientific frontier and societal challenges. It wants to be an attractive destination for experienced researchers and support the training of future talent. Research, including fundamental research, remains the basis for developing innovation and technology transfer. The strategy has four main objectives: 1. Developing the research, development and innovation system 2. Supporting innovation ecosystems associated with smart specializations 3. Mobilization towards innovation 4. Increasing European and international collaboration The strategy identifies seven priority areas for smart specialization at the national level: 1. Bioeconomy 2. Digital economy and space technologies 3. Energy, environment and climate change 4. Advanced manufacturing 5. Advanced functional materials 6. Environment and eco-technologies 7. Health - prevention, diagnosis and advanced treatment At the regional level, each development region will have its own Research and Innovation Strategy for Smart Specialization (RIS3). The national and regional strategies will be synergistic. Key actions include: - Increasing the number and scientific skills of researchers - Ensuring the transition to open science - Increasing the competitiveness of research organizations - Modernizing and efficiently using RDI infrastructure - Connecting research and innovation activities with societal challenges - Supporting involvement in smart specialization projects - Supporting smart specialization at the regional level - Encouraging collaboration between research organizations and the private sector - Developing technology transfer at the national level - Supporting innovation entrepreneurship - Increasing participation in EU programs - Developing bilateral/multilateral collaborations for RDI The strategy aims to significantly increase public R&D spending to reach 1% of GDP by 2027. Exciting news for the space tech industry as The City of Edinburgh Council recently approved plans for a £2.5 million, state-of-the-art telescope station at Heriot-Watt University's Research Park on the western outskirts of the capital 🔭📡 “Any company that works in the space sector and who chooses to set-up here will not only have ease of access to Scotland’s capital and the central belt, but to our raft of talented students, keen to gain industry experience and employment,” Professor Gill Murray, deputy principal of business and enterprise at Heriot-Watt University. Meet ERC grantee Veronique Dehant! Together with Anny Cazenave and Mioara MANDEA, she is on a quest to better understand the deep interior of our planet. 🌍✨ Using an ERC Synergy Grant, the three researchers look at the fluid core of our planet. They combine up-to-date observations of the Earth gravity field, the magnetic field and the Earth rotation, and develop precise modelling of the core flows. The team developed a miniature model of a fluid planet in their lab to better understand the dynamics of fluid layers inside the Earth. With this “lab planet”, they want to visualise at least qualitatively how the fluid flow changes when the rotation speed varies in time. Similar to many other ERC Synergy Grants projects, this project crosses national borders: Veronique Dehant is based at the Royal Observatory of Belgium, Anny Cazenave at Magellium, and Mioara Mandea at the CNES. The Innovation Mission on Space Technologies from #India to the #Netherlands concluded with new opportunities for collaboration in the space sector. Delegates from government, industry, and academia participated in the program organized by the Netherlands Innovation Network India, NSO - Netherlands Space Office, and SpaceNed. Various Dutch universities and organizations showcased their advancements. From Global Value Web, Prabhanjana Simha was able to connect with the visionaries and the leaders in this domain. Highlights included knowledge sessions, B2B matchmaking, and visits to Airbus and ESA/ESTEC. This mission underscored the potential for stronger space partnerships between the Netherlands and India.   Also, it is now clear that the Indian Space program is poised for a lift-off. With the recent advancements in space technology and the gamut of startups entering the industry, we will truly see the next frontier.
