Caught up with Michael Chan 陈玉涛 CEO of Zandbank James Goh and Yong Hui Tan from Bybit. I am not sure where crypto will end up but it was great to be able to chat about a frontier in finance over good food and drinks. Mick was my COO when I ran Asia. He was imaginative and gutsy. He often challenged me to take a bet on him and his team and I always did (eventually). They always over-delivered. I am glad he is helming Zandbank with ex-colleagues like James. James joined us in First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB) some years after I had brought Yonghui on. He streamlined our regulatory reporting processes and worked out all the kinks. If you are from Banking you’ll understand how critical this is. I will always be grateful to Yonghui. When I moved to FAB Asia I asked him to come along with me. It was a risky move for him coming from one of the strongest banks globally but he made the leap and helped me charge up FAB’s Asia business. His insight and ability to project forward were so valuable during my time in Asia. I saw in him what I’ve known: that a strong CFO doesn’t just tell you where the business was or even where the business is; they tell you where the business will be and what you can do about it. I went to the #HongKongFintechWeek2023 so you didn't have to. Here's my report from the floor of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. For starters, I think the comparison among #Singapore, #HongKong, and #Dubai for #crypto is gas-lighting, because that's the equivalent of comparing a durian, a date, and a loquat - it's highly subjective. If #crypto is meant to be #decentralized, surely the places where #crypto companies are based can be as well? So these will just be my personal observations from Hong Kong. 1. There is a strong desire by Hong Kong's administrators to bring shine back to the financial hub. With real estate prices slumping and an increasing number of mortgages in excess of the property value, Hong Kong is facing some serious economic challenges. 2. The general sentiment on the ground in Hong Kong is not optimistic, there are a LOT fewer expatriates in the city than there ever used to be and the street are eerily quiet. Driving through Wan Chai on a Wednesday evening during what ought to have been peak hour was a bizarre experience (sort of like the Day After Tomorrow). 3. #Crypto OTC businesses are booming. But that also suggests they are catering to customers, likely from China, to facilitate capital flight - this is not good, especially if the goal is to attract more investment dollars into the fragrant harbor. Can #crypto save Hong Kong? I honestly do not know, but I can assure you that the powers that be within Hong Kong are willing to give it a try. The welcome we received in Hong Kong was nothing short of overwhelming. The Hong Kong FinTech Week was incredibly well run, efficient, and very polished, even the app that was used for the event was slick and professional. I thought it strange the exhibitor's passes didn't give access to the various talks and panel discussions, but it didn't really matter because I could watch them live from my phone using the excellent WiFi within the event hall. I was told by friends from Hong Kong that this year's Hong Kong Fintech Week was a lot bigger than last year's. I did find it unfortunate that the event was split into two halls as that also split the crowd and many went to one hall while skipping the other, and vice versa. I did make many interesting contacts, but most were not from Hong Kong, which is good in the sense that the Fintech Week attracted a global audience, but makes me wonder what is happening at the grassroots level of the #crypto scene in Hong Kong. Side events were well attended and the parties were rammed, but I've never thought much could be achieved from these other than getting smashed and having a good time (my personal view). Finally, I'm not sure if a spot #bitcoin #ETF is the Holy Grail that Hong Kong is looking for.
