Methods of Prosperity Newsletter examining the methods used by historical figures to accumulate wealth. Part 20: Bill Gates TL;DR In 1980, Mary Gates was a board member of United Way of King County. She influenced IBM CEO John Opel to consider her son’s company, Microsoft, for IBM’s “Project Chess”. Project Chess was an initiative to develop software for IBM's new personal computer. A company named Digital Research lost the contract for the job. IBM hired Microsoft to replace Digital Research. Microsoft didn’t have an existing operating system. Bill Gates outsourced the work. He purchased 86-DOS from Seattle Computer Products for $50,000 and adapted it for IBM. This strategic move set Microsoft on a path to dominate the PC software market. Bill Gates became the youngest American billionaire. He amassed a net worth between $123 and $125 billion by November 2023. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation manage his philanthropic efforts today. Learn more in comments. #billgates #microsoft #billionaire #newsletter

“I am here with my team to contribute to what we believe to be a vital conversation for Australia: to help shape what the next 30 years could look like through the responsible development and adoption of AI.” This is how Steven Worrall opened Microsoft’s appearance at yesterday’s hearing of the Australian Senate Select Committee on Adopting AI. My colleagues, Sarah Carney, Lee Hickin and I joined Steven to discuss how Australia can create the right policy settings to drive economic prosperity and societal impact. We were grateful to the committee for the opportunity to expand on our written submission and represent the work and ideas of so many of our Microsoft colleagues, both here in Australia and around the world. And while this was a hearing held in Canberra on a Friday afternoon, it is part of a ongoing global conversation that Australia can both learn from and lead on. It’s clear that our country occupies an enviable vantage point to explore the experience of other countries while being a pioneer in finding the right balance between managing risk and amplifying opportunity. It’s why we commend the work of the Committee as it debates issues that are critical for Australia to get right: the future skills of today’s workforce and the shape of the workplace of the future; concerns about the energy needs of AI solutions to exploring how AI solutions can address our energy needs; and expanding human capabilities while respecting human dignity and protecting humanity from harm. Although at times we might have different ideas on the means, we are certainly agreed on the ends: to ensure AI serves our country and its citizens by expanding opportunity, earning trust, protecting fundamental rights and advancing sustainability. #Microsoft #AI #Innovation #Trust #AIGuardrails #AIPolicy Liz Fitch Kate Seward Clayton Noble Ryan Black Fei Wu Madeline Shepherd Elizabeth Greene Richard Harris Melissa Fai May Oboodi Sarah Chapman

The latest cover story in the Washington Business Journal is a Q&A I had with Microsoft Federal's Candice Ling, the top executive leading a critical division within the tech titan that counts the entire U.S. government as its key customer. What that looks like and insights on how she does it can be found in the story below!

Another strong result for Microsoft Ireland Research. (Since 2017, Microsoft has transferred ownership of its New Zealand business from a subsidiary in Luxembourg to Bermuda to, most recently, Ireland.) Also, welcome to NZME Towers, John Anthony

European Patriot for Unity and Democracy. President of Congress of European Emerging Regions. Portuguese. With Ukraine for Victory.
Simple naive question... If Mme Margrethe Vestager says what is quoted below, why the European Commission uses Microsoft platforms instead of Made in Europe ones (namely already paid with European funds; our money)? Why does the European Commission functionally imposes as a non-optional standard? Am I the only one who had to use it under Commission "suggestion"? Wasn't the Commissioner allowed to speak out before? Quoting: Mme @Margrethe Vestager "We are concerned that Microsoft may be giving its own communication product Teams an undue advantage over competitors, by tying it to its popular productivity suites for businesses. And preserving competition for remote communication and collaboration tools is essential as it also fosters innovation on these markets. If confirmed, Microsoft’s conduct would be illegal under our competition rules. Microsoft now has the opportunity to reply to our concerns."
