Today is SUDEP Action Day – an annual day devoted to creating awareness about SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) and inspire actions to save lives. SUDEP is a significant cause of death for people with epilepsy, but many people with epilepsy and their families remain uninformed about SUDEP and the risks. The theme this year is #mysafetymatters focusing on safety first and the need for more information for every person with epilepsy, their families and healthcare professionals to empower them to take an active role in discussing, reviewing, and reducing the risks of SUDEP. SUDEP Action Day is a global awareness day supported by organisations across the world. It always occurs the third Wednesday in October. Check out SUDEP Action’s resources to share here: https://lnkd.in/eduuwKHC #SUDEPActionDay2023 #mysafetymatters #epilepsy #raiseawareness

Epilepsy Consortium Scotland’s Specialist Epilepsy Appointments report emphasises the importance of communication and engagement with healthcare professionals and the significance of face-to-face care. For many people, meeting with specialists in person is a way of building trust. The report makes evident the need for patient choice as the impact of epilepsy is unique to each individual, and so every person with the condition has different experiences and needs. One of the challenges we often hear from our young patients of childbearing age, who opt for a hysterectomy to address the years of suffering caused by fibroids or endometriosis, is the pressure from physicians to sway their decision or recommend procedures that don’t align with their important personal choices or future family planning wishes. Consider the case of K, a woman in her early 30s who has dealt with chronic pain for years due to endometriosis. Her experience highlights a narrative we frequently encounter: patients feeling unseen and unheard in their healthcare journey. It also underscores the crucial importance of active listening in patient care. At CIGC, we deeply value this aspect, ensuring that our approach is not just about offering procedures, but about thoroughly understanding and aligning with our patients' wishes and needs. We strive to ensure that every voice is heard, and every treatment plan is created with individual care and respect. Your health, your choice – that's our promise to you. 💙

“How to Get Your Affairs in Order” – Online – Thursday, December 14, 2023 (2 pm – 3:30 pm central time) This program will provide suggestions for when a doctor says it’s time to “get your affairs in order.” We will examine a checklist for the dying and how many of the items on such a checklist can be done years before a diagnosis. Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: ∙ Understand how planning for the end of life leads to a better death someday and a better life right now. ∙ Recognize the importance of making plans, writing them down, and sharing them with others. ∙ Identify actions that reduce fears and anxiety. ∙ Recognize the ways that death doulas, care teams, elder care attorneys, and loved ones help support people at the end of life. The link will be emailed to you before the session. This is available for 1.5 CEUs through the Continuing Education Institute of Illinois. I’d also welcome caregivers, patients, and curious participants. Please join us! Each session also includes an “Ask a Doula” Q&A at the end where I’ll answer all your questions.
