This is a major announcement for T-Mobile, as it indicates its progressing to become the primary all-mode #communications supplier for both #consumers and #business users. Adding the Lumos Fiber assets for #Fiber #broadband connectivity enables T-Mobile and especially T-Mobile For Business to become a bundled provider of #mobile, #FWA over #5G, and #fiber #internet and #communications services. And while the acquired fiber assets are currently regional and in a relatively limited area, there is no doubt T-Mobile plans to invest to greatly expand the fiber infrastructure. Given T-Mobile's aggressive pricing and marketing, this a warning to Verizon and AT&T that T-Mobile is coming for their customers. #Uncarrier

iliad takes 19 percent stake in #Swedish telco Tele2. #French company will become Tele2's reference shareholder. French telco Iliad is set to pay $1.26 billion for a 19.8 percent stake in Swedish #network operator Tele2. Iliad, which is owned by investor Xavier Niel, will purchase the shares from #investment company Kinnevik, which is currently Tele2’s major shareholder. A statement released on Monday said the purchase will take place through the Iliad investment vehicle Freya Investissement, and will be worth 13 billion Krona ($1.26 billion). “Freya will become the reference shareholder of Tele2 upon closing of the #transaction,” the Iliad statement said. “With its #expertise and know-how in managing #telecom #assets, the #acquisition of this #strategic stake will offer the Iliad Group, through Freya, an opportunity to further Tele2’s growth and to collaborate with Tele2’s management team on innovation, convergence, and investments in next-generation networks.” Freya will purchase shares in three tranches, starting with an initial batch of 31,329,972 B-class shares in the company, representing 4.5 percent of its total capital. It will make two further investments subject to regulatory approval, taking its total holding to 19.9 percent. Thomas Reynaud, director of Freya and CEO of the Iliad Group, said the companies “have a lot in common.” He said: “We both believe in the #power of #innovation and the importance of an entrepreneurial mindset. Our business sector in #Europe is highly demanding. So, we have a great deal of respect for what Tele2’s #shareholders, management and teams have achieved, and we’re delighted that Kinnevik has chosen Freya as Tele2’s new reference shareholder. “We look forward to contributing to the next chapter of Tele2’s growth story.” Niel has been actively looking at telecoms investments across Europe, and in 2022 acquired a 2.5 percent stake in Vodafone Group through his investment vehicle Atlas Investissement. He is also attempting to merge Iliad’s operations in Italy with Vodafone Italia, but earlier this month saw a merger proposal that valued Vodafone Italia at €10.45 billion ($11.32bn) rebuffed. While it is putting money into telcos, Iliad is reportedly looking for fresh investment for its colocation data centre business OpCore, and may sell up to 14 percent of the company in a deal that could raise hundreds of millions of Euros.

T-Mobile makes more moves into fiber with another joint venture transaction with KKR to acquire Metronet, which claims to be the largest private fiber broadband operator in the country. T-Mobile is investing close to $5 billion to gain a 50% share in the joint venture. Metronet currently reaches more than 2 million homes and businesses across 17 states. This latest #fiberbroadband investment for T-Mobile complements a very similar transaction for Lumos Fiber. In both instances, T-Mobile becomes the retail operator for fiber services responsible for all customer facing activities, while both Lumos and Metronet are the wholesale network operator. I thought TMo might take a swing at Shentel and its Glo Fiber service, given the geographic proximity to Lumos, but maybe it's time will come, as TMo is clearly on the hunt to become a major fiber broadband player to better compete with AT&T, Verizon, and the cable industry, all of whom have mobile and wireline #broadband businesses. #tmobilemetronet #tmobile #metronet #telecom

The transaction, which includes a combination of cash and up to $2 billion in assumed debt, totals $4.4 billion. This deal encompasses US Cellular’s wireless customers, retail stores, and 30% of its spectrum assets, with the transaction expected to close in mid-2025 pending regulatory approvals. - The acquisition is part of T-Mobile's ongoing strategy to expand its market presence amidst intensifying competition in the saturated wireless sector, where it contends with both traditional telecom rivals and cable providers offering bundled services. - T-Mobile has successfully distinguished itself from competitors by leveraging its lead in 5G technology, expanding coverage in rural areas, and providing wireless internet access in underserved regions. US technology specialist Viavi Solutions has proposed a £1 billion takeover of telecoms testing group Spirent Communications. This deal would take another UK-listed business off the London market. If the deal is approved, Spirent would join the growing list of companies delisting from London. Viavi, listed on Nasdaq, offers network testing and monitoring services to various sectors, including telecommunications, the military, and aerospace. Spirent also specialises in testing 5G and WiFi networks, "internet of things" devices, and cloud computing networks. Spirent's CEO, Eric Updyke, acknowledged the company's challenges due to the current economic conditions, which are expected to persist. However, he sees the deal as an opportunity to combine complementary products and expand their global market reach. Under the proposed deal, Spirent shareholders would receive 172.5p per share in cash and a special dividend of 2.5p per share instead of a final dividend.
