Always a pleasure returning to the Rochester Institute of Technology! Last night's chat with the Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations Club left me with valuable insights and reflections on what’s top of mind to our next generation of marketers. 1. They're curious: They're very curious about product marketing - what it is and its influence. They want to know how decisions are made for the products they use, and how companies engage users with one product before moving them to the next. 2. They're eager to learn how to tackle uncertainty head-on: The students are well aware of the uncertainties hovering over the job market, as highlighted in the news (we're all witnessing the news about layoffs). While this uncertainty is concerning, they're also gearing up to develop a mindset of resilience and adaptability. 3. Representation is instrumental to their motivation and outlook: It was heartening to see students share their aspirations and worries openly. Some students came up to me 1:1, saying that seeing someone like me, who shares similar upbringing and academic backgrounds, energizes them and motivates them. Thank you, @ritmadpr, for energizing and inspiring me!

Well the last 3 years seem to have flown by!   That first day seems so long ago now, sitting at my desk going through the complete range of emotions… Excitement: The initial thrill of starting something new. Fear: Worries about failure – would the phone ring, and would I even be able to get stock across from China in the middle of a pandemic? Determination: A strong resolve to make Secure Stores a success.   Loneliness: Just little old me, sitting at my new desk, with all my new IT equipment, new website and shiny new business cards.   Hope: Optimism about the future, aspirations for what the business could become, and the belief that hard work would eventually pay off. Elation: A cold call to someone who may require containers, and it going well. Taking my first order on day 1 – this is more than I expected from my first day in business. Support: I felt the support of the network I’d spent years building, and people rooting for me.     But above all, I think excitement was the overriding emotion that day. I certainly start year 3 with confidence and looking forward to another successful year for Secure Stores. Here’s to 2024… 🥂 Wishing you all success in your personal and professional lives.

Today I woke up thinking about “group genius.” I’d been to Seattle a total of three times before I started at T-Mobile — which just happens to be six years ago today. Each time there was some sort of a group focus. The first time, it was to see a concert. The third time, for a day-long interview loop. That second time, though, it was to give a talk: “Embrace the Cliches: The collaborative genius of rock bands, romantic comedies, and slow claps.” The central theme was that we all face different moments throughout life, alternating between being part of a group and taking a solo turn. Sometimes these moments are within our control, like quitting our pickleball league. Sometimes they are one of the many seasons of life, like an illness. But once you have that blueprint for “group genius,” you can glide through those moments of being alone and find yourself on the other side, back in collaboration. Six years ago today, I started this part of my career as a solo act. Today, I have as many other collaborators on the team I oversee as years I have been building out this function at T-Mobile. And numerous others across the company, and outside it as well. It’s always of comfort to me to remember that a solo turn may lead you to your next act, and that could be a supergroup — a position I am fortunate to find myself in today. #team #creativity #collaboration #genius

Layoffs are normal and they are more of a practical or convenient decisions for many companies although there are many perspectives which include redeployment or a phased manner of well thought out decision making. However, if someone in HR reads a scripted non-emotional note and announces it, it sure does talk about what a company stands for. For HR folks, this is a self-reflection moment as well. Last week I had an interview that turned into a moment of truth #transparency #newblogpost It was for an Ad Ops position that aligned with my background. I checked all the boxes — heck I even knew the SoHo office address by heart since I previously worked for this company. It was familiarity at it’s finest. Problem was that the role didn’t excite me. After company layoffs at the beginning of 2020, I pivoted into AdOps, a technical discipline of Advertising, as a way to bounce back into the workforce. And it worked. Over the past few years I worked my way up to the Manager level, gaining tech operational skills that set me apart. However, it was at the expense of putting my true talents and interests on the back burner. My Ad Ops interview was in the bag, but when the interviewer asked me if I’d be motivated by the job, I had a moment of undeniable truth. I realized the answer was no and that I was actually craving something new and true to my passions — which have resurfaced since being back on the job search. We usually hear about rejection from the hiring manager and hardly ever from the candidate. Well, this time I flipped the script. It took a lot for me to say “no” to that opportunity, BUT I truly believe that God has the right position for me — somewhere and it's in transit. Each "no" gets me closer to my "yes" and while it's still early in the year, faith without works is dead. So I will keep being strategic with my job search and network as companies start to hire again. New strength is coming and this makes me hopeful for those who trust in God will soar with wings like eagles. I’m believing that by this time next week that I will get the “yes” I’ve been hoping for.
