We are back at it with the 6th cycle of “Let’s Talk About It,” a 10-week group for folks who identify as Black men! It’ll start March 6th or 7th based on folks’ availability.This will be a dope space where we as Black men can be our authentic, uncensored, true selves, and be surrounded by other men who understand the complexities of navigating the world as Black men in America.(*** If you are homophobic, transphobic, or oppressive to any marginalized identities, this group is NOT for you!)Topics include: Unpacking Toxic Masculinity, trauma and the ways we respond, how we show up in relationships, police violence, self care, and so much more!The cost is only $50/wk for each individual (hopefully the community can come through and donate again so it’s free for everyone!) and there are sliding scale options for those who need it.*I will be making an ask for community donations/sponsorships soon!There is a max of 10 only people, so be sure to reserve your spot ASAP!E-mail me at [email protected] for more information! Here’s another equity issue in philanthropy: Black households donate a higher share of their wealth than white households. On average, Black donors give 25% more of their income annually than white households, and two-thirds of African American households donate to organizations and causes, totaling $11 billion each year.  Read more at: https://lnkd.in/gg72VEeV Most current philanthropy models are rooted in hoarding wealth gained from exploitation; how can we move towards truly grassroots models rooted in equity principles like mutual aid and community care?

In a recent piece titled "10 Major Legal Threats to U.S. Civil Society," the escalating legal hurdles faced by charitable nonprofits as they pursue their missions within communities are brought to light. These challenges manifest in the form of new laws that constrict their activities, heightened enforcement measures, and political assaults. Among these obstacles are governmental efforts to criminalize acts of compassion such as providing food and shelter to migrants and the homeless, extending aid to women in need of healthcare, and facilitating bail for those incarcerated. Additionally, charitable nonprofits find themselves under siege for their diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as their advocacy for free speech rights and the preservation of nonprofit nonpartisanship, epitomized by the longstanding Johnson Amendment. 🔗 Read more:

I'm over the moon to announce that Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs ("WLC") has received a $900,000 gift from MacKenzie Scott! This is the single largest donation in WLC’s 55-year-old history. Situated in the nation’s capital, WLC is on the cutting edge of #civilrights battles that affect communities across the country. Our key focus areas include #educationequity, #disabilityjustice, #fairhousing, #workersrights, #immigrantrights and criminal legal system reform. We celebrate MacKenzie Scott’s recognition of #civilrights litigation as an essential tool in the fight for #racialequity. With this transformational gift, we will deepen our partnerships with low-income communities of color to advance #racialjustice. Together, we will strive to dismantle systems of racial oppression and to pursue lasting change in the Washington, DC region and the nation. The gift coincides with the launch of our #strategicplanning process. Our mission is to create a more just, inclusive, and equitable society. And our mission has never felt more urgent – as we gear up for a monumental election year in 2024, for Washington, DC, and the nation.

I was disappointed this morning to wake up to a reminder that Fearless Fund is still amidst a lawsuit because they’ve provided grant opportunities to Black women. And it’s time to sound the alarm. 🚨📣 These types of lawsuits are incredibly dangerous, and we’ve already seen the aftermath of recent affirmative action decisions give companies and organizations the wiggle room to start to remove valuable programs and resources that could grow and advance black and brown communities. 🌱✨ Only 50% of companies survive after 5 years in business. That survival rate is 3% for Black women owned businesses given the same time frame. The reality is Black women owned businesses need additional resources to have a fighting chance for survival. 💸✊🏾 Watch the video below. Share with your community. Philanthropy works to increase opportunity, especially to those historically excluded. The lawsuit against Fearless Fund is an attack on the rights of philanthropic organizations to give in line with their values, as protected under the First Amendment. Attempts to restrict the values-driven work of philanthropy impact so much great work happening around the country and in our region. This would have great consequences for initiatives like the grant we provided to revitalize small-town grocery access for rural residents in North Dakota. Justice is relative. Healing is relative. One size doesn’t fit all when it comes to justice and healing. Survivors deserve options, and restorative justice processes prioritize survivor-centered, flexible justice over the rigid framework of the criminal system.
