FMCSA's recent decision to no longer require inward-facing cameras in the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Program is a positive development toward the ultimate goal of getting more data to better understand the safety of 18- to 20-year-old drivers. As #ATRI research found, though, motor carriers see greater barriers to participation in SDAP: increased insurance costs foremost among them. Great to reflect on key insights from the recent Bapcor Drive Expo! Last week, I had the opportunity to attend a compelling session led by Martin Storey, Executive GM of Bapcor New Zealand. Joined by panelists Lesley Yates from AAAA and Lee Marshall from MTA, who delved into the evolving dynamics of automotive apprenticeship programs on both sides of the Tasman. One aspect of the discussion was centered around the need for significant reforms in the training frameworks within Australia and New Zealand. Despite the substantial efforts by the previous NZ Government to 'enhance' skills training through initiatives like Te Pūkenga, the automotive industry very much faces a critical shortage of Automotive Technicians. Why should the responsibility of managing apprenticeship programs stand with Government? My experiences with MITO (Motor Industry Training Organisation) highlighted that when industry experts lead the management and oversight of apprentice training programs it yielded effective results. I strongly advocate for the current Government revert to empowering industry professionals to again take the reins. By leveraging our expertise, we can confidently address and overcome the technician shortage in New Zealand. As an industry it’s time for the automotive sector, its work providers, and the supply chain to take positive action to stem a real decline in repair capability. #upskill #apprenticeships #skillsdevelopment AutoRaise NBRA / VBRA Thatcham Research working to build the bodyshop talent hub to collaboratively create that positive action.

According to a notice scheduled to be published in the Federal Register tomorrow (5/14), FMCSA is rescinding the requirements that carriers wishing to participate in the under-21 Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program (1) have inward facing cameras installed; and (2) register their apprenticeship program with the Department of Labor. These changes stem from Congress's directive in its March 9, 2024 Consolidated Appropriations Act that FMCSA remove these requirements to help bolster voluntary participation in the program. The inward-facing camera and DOL apprenticeship registration requirements were widely derided by many in the industry, and almost certainly contributed to the extremely low participation numbers to date. One of my favourite reads every month is Today's Trucking magazine. It full of great information. In the January - February issue the Pulse Readers Survey asked some thoughts on Driver Training and the state of truck driver training. Lets look at the numbers: 86% of the participants of the survey were licence to drive a tractor - trailer. This to me is important. Who better to respond. 51% say MELT or now ELT did not improve the quality of entry-level truck drivers. 34% said somewhat. That is not good. The most telling number of all? 82% say newly licensed tractor-trailer drivers need to complete formal apprenticeships. We at KRTS Transportation Specialists Inc support this 100%. Is it time for a Red Seal apprenticeship for truck drivers in Canada? Some of industries best schools and carriers say “YES”. Some of the best insurance companies and brokers say “YES”. The Professional Truck Training Alliance of Canada (PTTAC) launched officially in December of 2022 and they say “YES”. The PTTAC mandate includes a number of key objectives, one of them being making commerical truck driving a recognized Red Seal trade in Canada. #realtalk 😎 #raisethebar
