Culture eats strategy for breakfast..and snacks on innovation, collaboration, and AI too. In organizations, especially large ones, many things are hard: innovation, driving product delight, and even basic collaboration. Adopting AI is no exception. While I’ve focused on helping teams improve these areas, I’ve spent less time analyzing why they’re so difficult to begin with. Listening to Jeremy Utley and Henrik Werdelin's podcast with Ethan Mollick, a Wharton professor and “Accidental AI Expert” shed some light on this for me. When asked about getting people to use AI in organizations, Ethan said, “It has to be a CULTURAL thing….[In] competitive cultures, people don't share anyway, right?” Competitive cultures often create reluctance to share information, unhealthy rivalries, and poor collaboration. Employees fear being replaced, leading to hoarding of information and resistance to sharing how they obtained it - stopping AI adoption in its tracks. Ethan also noted, “if you’ve built a cooperative learning culture…everyone’s willing to share” which he sees in nonprofits, startups, and mission driven organizations. These are the organizations adopting AI more quickly as they’re focused on their raison d'être and do whatever it takes to achieve it. #CultureIsHungry #CollaborativeCultureRules #innovation #AI

If you weren’t able to attend, you can get a few pointers on AI adoption: Adopting AI as a capability is the way to make it a strategic technology and not just a series of opportunistic pilot projects and offshoots. The biggest barriers here is knowledge on AI and a clear direction. The solution: Set a direction Organisation leaders must engage in setting a clear direction, including what specific measurable outcomes that all AI initiatives must affect. Anything from NPS (Banks excluded 😉  ), savings or employee satisfaction goes. You systemize your AI adoption Set up systems that keep the knowledge coming. As Ronnie Coleman 💪  taught us, you must allocate time and put in the effort to reach our AI adoption goals. Measure your adoption Set goals and measure the progress. We see a crazy amount of AI initiatives but very few with set goals and even fewer measure if the goals are actually met. The use of AI: a hot topic for 2024... This AI generated image is better than I could ever do with a pencil and paper. But one thing that cannot be created by the software is what the image represents. Our team is a collective of amazing professionals who go out of their way to brighten the day of the people around them. Case in point, we have one team member who has been leaving tiny (and adorable) little ducks around the office. While I have my suspicions, this individual remains anonymous. However, I can say confidently that the actions of this individual speak to an understanding of how it can be those unassuming moments that can build a team and a sense of belonging. All fostering an environment where people are motivated to collaborate and take risks, an essential factor if a team wishes to continue to innovate. This is not something that can be created by adding a prompt to any software. It is created when people choose to connect. Regardless if you love it, hate it, or have no idea what the hype is all about, the reality is that AI is having a huge impact in our world. One of the biggest fears that I read about is its potential to replace human labor. And maybe they're right. It will undoubtedly replace human labor in some ways, however by doing so it can create space where we can redirect our time and energy into activities that can foster environments of collaboration, innovation and a common purpose. #leadershipdevelopment #team #purpose #ai #collaboration
