30 years ago we lost Senna. In this day of reflection, the key recurring thought I have after all these years continues to be about his struggle to break down the "European/French glass ceiling" within FIA Management in those days, how much he had to fight the "status quo" trying to level the playing field, and how much only his talent alone would not have been enough if he had not done that. This struggle is real in many organizations for many people right now still. 🔷 As an executive, are you sure you are really fostering a real meritocratic organization, where talent alone is truly the only way for promotions/hires? 🔷 Even when the good intentions are there, are you sure your organization is not falling into the "subconscious" trap, and is able to really filter/recognize diverse true talent appropriately? ✴ I have been exposed to European Business ecosystems now for over 20 years. To my surprise, I still see mostly country-based corporate silos everywhere with very little exceptions. Germans hiring Germans, French hiring French, Italians hiring Italians, Dutch hiring Dutch.... It is obviously an exaggeration, but not that far from reality in upper management ladders in Europe. Imagine if Californian tech companies would have only Americans born in California within their high ranks... Needless to say, that is one of the key differentiating strengths of US businesses: it is the closer to a true meritocratic system the world has. European "resource allocation" is simply not optimal and too much "nationalized" still. ▶ Food for thought.

One of my favorite conversations from 2023: I spoke with Nikhil Patel, Treasurer and Deputy CFO for the City of Detroit. We discussed how we might incentivize private sector talent to Work for America, the outcomes this could drive for our country, and for our collective American experience. I had the privilege of spending time with a group of senior leaders in Washington DC last week, focused on navigating what leadership could look like in an election year. This year is likely to be one that is both divisive and volatile, and I imagine a year that could be challenging for any leader, regardless of their tenure or title. It’s why we’re investing the time to explore the topic, hoping to leave leaders feeling more confident and equipped for all that’s ahead. This immersion was filled with conversations about divisiveness, and most of them came back to leading with curiosity and clarity and courage. We spent time on Capitol Hill, and with leaders who understand this climate better than most of us do. And while they acknowledged that consumers and communities are likely more divided than ever, they all focused more on what unites us. They encouraged us to look for signals of connection and shared interest, filtering out what can seem like noise and distraction. This seemed ironic coming from a city that, at least from the outside, is the epitome of disfunction and disagreement. But once you step back from the noise of the 24/7 news cycle and social media, it is precisely what I should have expected. It was optimistic and encouraging, brave and resilient. In fact, what always strikes me about this place—this city of statues and stories—is the resiliency of the people who live and work here, and the optimism of the ideas that guide and fuel them. You can feel it in the hustle that is as pervasive on the streets as it is in the hallowed halls. And in the careers of everyday people that outlive administrations because ultimately, they believe in the power of the institutions that anchor us, if not the leaders who currently sit in the chair. You sense it in the weight of our collective history, told through the strength of marble arches and granite facades, and the monuments carved to honor leaders and the ideas they embodied and fought for. Washington DC, perhaps more than most cities, is a testament to what unites us, what guides us, and what ultimately will be the legacy of this experiment in self-governance, centuries in the making. Which leads me to something I’ve been thinking about a lot. Legacy. Maybe it’s my own tenure that has me in this mindset. Or the privilege I feel leading the work I do. But what I believe with all my heart is that when we are at our best, we drive work that creates impact that will outlive each and every one of us. It is certainly evident in our nation’s capital. And I believe it’s possible for each of us. What work are you leading that will live beyond you? What legacy are you creating?

Had the pleasure of listening to Skot Welch, President and Founder of Global Bridgebuilders, present to our Leadership Grand Rapids class a few weeks back, and since then I’ve been reflecting on a topic he discussed where I feel so many leaders and businesses miss the mark: the difference between welcoming and belonging. Welcoming feels like you have someone at the front gate, greeting you and letting you in, making you feel cozy. Hoping you say good things about them or their business because they’re nice to you (because it makes them more money, usually). But…not everyone gets through the gate, either. Not everyone gets to feel welcomed, often times due to systematic discrepencies. Belonging is when there is no gate. You walk in and you’re there because you’re made to feel like you’re supposed to be there. Those that surround you are genuine and intimate, and you relate to them through real life experiences. You remember that we are people before we are professionals, and they recognize this, too! Vulnerability and acceptance reign supreme because that’s how we make each other feel empowered and trusted. Think about how this can apply to your role in your business and your organization’s culture, and if you aren’t sure which side of the spectrum your company falls under, look at it like this: don’t be concerned with the gatekeeper. Be concerned that there’s a gate to begin with. Get rid of the gate.
