They don't need to be a person in a high-up position, perhaps they are an amazing person who is trying to make a positive change in society. As an ally and someone who knows the value of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace, I want to shout out to all of the amazing black leaders who are trying to positively change the world. Holding steady is crucial, but when is it no longer productive? Today, many Black women leaders in higher ed are facing unprecedented challenges. As Dr. Annice E. Fisher notes in her article, 'Hold Steady or Issue an Exit Ticket?' (https://lnkd.in/gPbdqJH8), many Black women are confronted with the tough decision to 'hold steady' or issue an 'exit ticket' to protect themselves. Yet, amidst these challenges, their power and choice remain unyielding. Institutions and teams should consider: 1️⃣ Acknowledging that holding steady is important in leadership 2️⃣ Knowing when holding steady is no longer productive 3️⃣ Actively supporting Black women leaders 4️⃣ Normalizing exits To our Black community members navigating these complexities, join us for our February Affinity Leadership Healing Circle. Breaking Walls – Building Legacy…what a powerful message to latch on to for 2024 and beyond! “Thank you” Integra LifeSciences and Black Employees United at Integra for Leadership and Development (B.U.I.L.D) for having me as your 2024 keynote speaker! It was another life-altering #BlackHistoryMonth event that focused squarely on this year’s theme and my book Cracks in the Wall by Ronnie Stallworth www.cracksinthewall.net. READ THIS ALL-POSITIVE APPROACH! My message was primarily about Breaking “internal/self-erected” walls that prevent us from reaching our next level of growth (read that again). My biggest walls were internal!! For example, I was born into poverty; however, I found ways to Break Walls (with the help of others in many cases) by focusing internally on things that I had control over. For Building Legacy, I focused on personal and purposeful actions that any of us can do to be remembered as someone who left our family and others “set up for success” (not saddled with generational debt). For example, my dad left me with a lot of his wisdom; however, he didn’t have life insurance, a Will, or appreciable monetary inheritance. I can personally leave a legacy for my family and others if I didn't do anything beyond these four things (including sharing my wisdom). All four are “my responsibility” and things I can do by focusing internally on what I have control over. Don’t misunderstand me, external factors and biases ARE real; however, by focusing internally "first", we can mitigate the impact of many external factors on our lives! My alternative was, spending a lifetime focusing on things that I had little or no control over! Equitable earnings for Black professionals are crucial in dismantling systemic inequality, fostering diversity and inclusion, propelling social and economic advancement and narrowing the racial wealth gap. With less than 2% of Fortune 500 CEOs being Black, it's imperative that Black Business Leaders cultivate qualities that enhance their visibility and propel them toward filling the leadership void. 🌟 Welcoming Black History Month with a Lens on Leadership and Learning 🌟 February marks a time of reflection and celebration for the invaluable contributions African Americans have made to the arts and beyond. This Black History Month, our focus is on deepening our understanding of key issues, starting with White Fragility, and how they intersect with leadership and inclusivity in the workplace. As someone committed to leadership development, I recognize the importance of confronting and understanding my own biases and privileges. The arts, a realm profoundly enriched by African American creativity, offer a powerful medium for exploring these complex themes. 📚 My journey this month includes immersing myself in pivotal works like "White Fragility" by Robin DiAngelo, aiming to foster a more inclusive leadership style and organizational culture. Leadership Tip: Embrace vulnerability by acknowledging what you don't know and commit to learning. Action Step: Initiate open dialogues within your teams about diversity and inclusion. Use art as a starting point for these conversations. Call to Action: Support African American artists and thinkers. Let their work inspire your leadership and organizational practices. This month, let's pledge to not only celebrate but also actively learn from the rich cultural heritage and contributions of African Americans. As we celebrate Black History Month, I began to reflect on what was a common leadership factor among our renowned black leaders that we recognize for their contributions to history in this country. What I deducted is that each of these leaders exhibited extraordinary courage and leadership in their own way trailblazing against social injustice and promoting the well-being of black people in the US. For example, Rosa Parks displayed courage and leadership as she refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 inspiring thousands of blacks to boycott the buses there for over a year. Rosa Parks stated, “You must never be fearful about what you are doing when it is right.” In today’s work world, courage and leadership has a more complex meaning and impact in that we are becoming a complex, diverse, and competitive workforce. It takes courage and leadership to listen to diverse perspectives, and then be willing to change direction and minds, to speak-up amongst adversity when we see injustices, and to create a safe environment where we can fail, adapt, be resilient and open to change and innovation. We admire the courage and leadership of our black leaders of yesterday and today. We can surely learn from their stories.
