ISWAN strongly condemns the recent hijacking of the India-bound cargo ship, #GalaxyLeader. The video released by the Yemeni rebel group shows Houthi fighters descending on the ship from a helicopter, and taking all 25 crew members hostage. This hijacking aligns with the Houthis' earlier statement, where they vowed to target Israel-linked ships in the Red Sea until the end of the Israel-Palestine conflict. "Seafarers are an essential workforce who are only doing their jobs to transport cargo from one place to another and help the world survive. Hijacking a vessel as a consequence of Geo-political conflict can have a serious impact on the lives and well-being of innocent seafarers and their families back home. We appeal to the captors and all those involved to immediately release the vessel's crew on humanitarian grounds. Their welfare is of utmost importance to ISWAN and its partners worldwide." - says ISWAN's Mr. Chirag Bahri. We emphasize that ships should avoid transiting past the Yemeni coast unless deemed safe by relevant authorities, with the safety of seafarers being of paramount importance. Our thoughts are with the crew taken hostage, and we fervently hope for their well-being. #Hijacked #Shiphijacking #Houthis #Yemen

International Seafarers Day, let's spend a minute to be aware of this: "The Day of the Seafarer is a time to celebrate and recognize the two million people around the world who operate the ships that carry more than 80% of the volume of world trade. Seafarers are vital in ensuring a seamless flow of essential goods that eventually make it into markets, homes, and onto our tables. Without them, the world would not be able to transport the large quantities of commodities that societies require to survive. But their own lives have been put on the line in the face of grave threats. Attacks on international shipping routes and acts of piracy are unacceptable. Ships and seafarers must not be held hostage and hijacked. Seafarers should not be collateral victims in wider geopolitical conflicts. Seafarers from across the globe provide a vital source of income to their families back home, while on long voyages at sea. Let us together salute them for their essential work and support their safety." ~UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres #safetytipsatsea #Seafarers #IMO

Seafarers are the backbone of global trade, facing immense challenges daily to ensure goods reach our shelves. However, a concerning trend has emerged: the criminalization of seafarers due to machinery failures, despite these incidents often being beyond their control. The consequences of this trend are severe. Seafarers, who dedicate their lives to this profession, are being unfairly targeted and subjected to legal action for incidents that are part of the inherent risks of maritime operations. This not only tarnishes their careers but also has detrimental effects on their mental health and well-being. Criminalization also undermines maritime safety. Fear of legal repercussions can lead to underreporting of incidents, hindering the industry's ability to learn from mistakes and improve safety standards. It also discourages talented individuals from pursuing careers in the maritime sector, exacerbating the industry's existing shortage of skilled seafarers. Moreover, criminalization reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the complexities of maritime operations. Machinery failures can result from a variety of factors, including design flaws, manufacturing defects. While following a planned maintenance system (PMS) is the duty of a seafarer, it is important to note that even strict adherence to a PMS does not guarantee that machinery failures will not occur. Some of the reasons for machinery failures are poor accessibility to spare parts and the procurement of poor-quality spare parts to save money. These issues are often beyond the control of individual seafarers and require systemic solutions. Holding individual seafarers criminally liable for such failures ignores the systemic nature of these issues and shifts blame away from where it truly belongs. To address this issue, we must advocate for a more balanced and just approach. Seafarers should not be scapegoated for incidents that are beyond their control. Instead, we should focus on improving safety standards, enhancing training programs, and ensuring that seafarers are supported rather than penalized in the event of a machinery failure. By ending the criminalization of seafarers for machinery failures, we can create a safer, more just maritime industry that values and respects the contributions of its workforce. It's time to stand up for seafarers' rights and ensure that they are treated fairly and with the dignity they deserve. #seafarers #maritime #marine #imo #shipping #dgshipping

Recognized by the United Nations as an international day of observance, today is Day of the Seafarer – a hugely important occasion where everyone (in maritime and the wider public) can show appreciation for those at sea. With this years theme of #SafetyTipsAtSea, seafarers and seafarer organizations are encouraged to share how they work to enhance maritime safety and security, whether that’s based on equipment being used, advances in training, or generally keeping up to date with ways to stay safe onboard. Given the current geopolitical situations, keeping our seafarers safe has never been more critical. The direct impact of war on shipping routes and port calls are widely known, and industry officials are rightly joining the calls to offer enhanced security to protect those at risk. Day of the Seafarer was established in 2010, with the aim of raising awareness of the vital role that seafarers play. By now, everyone surely knows that the profession is crucial for global trade, transporting cargoes and keeping the economy moving. This day gives the opportunity to show appreciation and say a very big ‘thank you’ to our seafarers, of who we should be immensely proud. #DayofTheSeafarer #Seafarers #Maritime #SafetyatSea #IMO #SafetyTraining

It is the Day of the Seafarer today. A day internationally recognized to honor the invaluable contributions of seafarers to global trade and economies. While it is a day of celebration, it's an opportunity to highlight challenges: Shore Leave: The joy of setting foot on land is a rare privilege for many seafarers. Stringent port regulations and tight turnaround times often restrict their ability to enjoy well-deserved shore leave, impacting their well-being and mental health. Dignity in Travel: Seamless travel across airports is a dream. Quite often, seafarers are the ones who are asked "can you step aside, sir" by the immigration and whose bags are opened by the customs. Dignity in Ports: Instances of harassment in ports remain troublingly common. This not only affects their personal experiences but also taints the perception of the maritime industry and the country. Customs coming with a shopping list! PSCOs threatening detention! Port Authorities threatening delays. Criminalization: Seafarers risk of being unjustly criminalized for maritime incidents beyond their control. This is a grim reality that many seafarers face in unfamiliar jurisdictions. While we celebrate The Day, let's also push for tangible changes. The accountability mechanisms in our industry is currently geared to foster mistrust. We need policies that truly support seafarers rights, enhances dignity and develops trust. #DayOfTheSeafarer #Maritime #SeafarerRights

The Day of the Seafarer (25 June) was established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised STCW Convention. The Day of the Seafarer serves as a global tribute to the hard work and sacrifices of seafarers in driving the world economy forward. This day is a significant occasion to honour the vital role that seafarers play in facilitating international trade and ensuring the smooth functioning of the shipping industry. The International Maritime Organization (IMO), established this event to emphasize the importance of maritime safety, security, and environmental protection. With a specific theme chosen each year, the Day of the Seafarer sheds light on the various aspects of seafarers' lives, challenges, and overall well-being. IMO World Maritime Day theme for 2024 is "Navigating the future: safety first!" Through this annual observance, the focus is not only on acknowledging the professionalism and dedication of seafarers but also on addressing the issues they encounter in their line of work. It encourages individuals and organizations to express gratitude for the contributions of seafarers and to advocate for initiatives that enhance their welfare and uphold their rights. I hope for the safe return of all seafarers to their homes, ensuring that no seafarer is left behind by their ship owners, and that no seafarer falls victim to pirate or terrorist attacks during their voyages. #SafetyTipsAtSea #seafarer #shipping #mariners #humansatsea
