Without emotions, even deciding between pasta or pizza can become a huge dilemma. A few years ago, neuroscientist Antonio Damasio made a groundbreaking discovery while studying individuals with damage in the brain region responsible for generating emotions. These individuals appeared normal in many respects, but they all shared a unique trait: they could not make decisions.This really makes you think. While logic and data are important, we can't ignore the role emotions play in our choices. They give us that extra nudge we need, whether it's in our personal lives or in marketing. An anxious brain can't learn. That's not opinion. That's well-grounded science. At the same time, introducing someone to any new idea *requires* them to learn. Put them together, and you get: Playing to someone's fear in messaging —sales, marketing, political, or otherwise—quite literally keeps someone from learning something new or even being able to hear it.
