🌈 Reflecting on Pride Month and the Road Ahead 🌈 As Pride Month comes to an end, it’s essential to remember that the spirit of pride and the fight for equality should resonate throughout the year. One crucial area where #equality needs significant attention is in fertility treatment for #LGBTQ+ couples. While a few states offer coverage for these treatments, many LGBTQ+ individuals and couples still face significant financial and logistical barriers. During the past months, there has been promising progress: 💪 Washington, D.C. has mandated insurers to cover IVF for same-sex couples starting next year. 💪 The American Society for Reproductive Medicine - ASRM has redefined infertility to include anyone needing medical intervention to conceive, regardless of their sexual orientation. 💪 Federal policies are expanding #IVF benefits to be more inclusive. These changes are steps in the right direction, but we must advocate for more states to adopt similar policies. Family-building should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their relationship status or sexual orientation. Seeking fertility treatment as an LGBTQ+ couple in the UK can present some challenges. While progress has been made in recent years, with the HFEA outlining guidelines to ensure equal access to fertility treatment, there are still barriers that make it difficult to access treatment especially due to the time sensitive nature of fertility.   For #NFAW23 today we spend time focusing on #lgbtq+families to continue the ongoing discussion on making fertility more accessible. Advocacy groups and LGBTQ+ organizations work to raise awareness, challenge discrimination, and improve access to fertility treatment for all couples, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Why we've launched a Gender Identity pathway 🥁 According to Stonewall, over a third of LGBTQ+ people feel they need to hide who they are at work. One in five feel that being LGBTQ+ limits their job opportunities. Trigger warning: fertility Last week, myself and 3 brave colleagues told our stories of starting a family and the journeys we went on, to get there. Miscarriage and infertility have long been a 'taboo' topic to discuss anywhere, let alone in the workplace and I feel incredibly proud of us all, for opening up conversation and changing the narrative. There was coffee, cake and tears (lots of them!) as we spoke of our experiences including IVF, adoption, miscarriage and infertility/TTC in an environment that felt safe and supportive. For some context: two of my colleagues have only been at Breathe a mere couple of months and it's a real credit to Breathe's company culture that they felt comfortable to be that vulnerable in front of us all. There was so much love and respect in the room, and it's really opened my eyes to how much sharing (& caring) can improve team relationships and build trust amongst colleagues. Better for people and better for business. I'm sure of it. Over the last 10 months, I wrote about: -How I had to hide my first pregnancy for 6 months. This experience inspired us to create "corduroy," a free #businessdevelopment coaching program for lawyers taking parental leave. -Offering a free laugh with a latte on my 38th birthday to connect with people and show that networking can be small gestures. -Providing my LinkedIn account as a safe space for anyone in the LGBTQ+ community to share their experience, or that I would post on their behalf, aligning our company ethos so that every voice is heard. -The impossible struggle of working while #parenting during COVID and how I'll never go back to hiding myself. This created a massive catalyst to help people who want to do things differently in the #legal industry. -I vehemently disagreed with a post advising women #lawyers to hide everything about themselves to get into a law firm. These posts are also the ones that resonated most with people. I write about authenticity because when you put your true self out there, everything changes (feels pretty good and sometimes terrifying). What would you write about if you weren't afraid?

Like everyone, LGBTQ+ folks need to be screened for breast, cervical, and colon cancer! Routine healthcare as well as preventative screenings are important at any age to detect illness at an early stage when treatment is likely to work best. LinkedIn Challenge Day #14 Today, we are asked to write a prediction that we are making based on our knowledge of our clients and the market. I am making a simple prediction: parents will continue to suffer as long as state governments continue to pass unfair, ungrounded, and untruthful legislature about their kids. As of today, 22 states have banned #genderaffirming care for #transgender children. Might I add “life-saving gender-affirming care? A person with thyroid insufficiency will never be denied their thyroxine, and a person with epilepsy will never be denied their anti-seizure medication, yet in every way today’s Republican governors are banning life-saving hormone treatment from some of the most vulnerable of all patients, their children. As a parent of a trans child, it hurts me to no avail. Organizations, startups and businesses like yours can make an immediate decision to shield your employee-families. You can do that by instituting immediate policies in place to protect them and their mental well-being. This is where I come in.
