For the last year or so our engagement with clients across the world has brought us into close contact with product teams large and small. There is no doubt that the topic of AI is grabbing their attention. For Product Management we are seeing a number of sub themes emerge and a top three would be:  How is AI likely to impact my customers and their jobs? How AI can genuinely improve my products and make a real difference to my customers?  How will AI impact the way product management teams operate and meet their professional objectives. Gallup's State of the American Workplace report found: only 48% of managers strongly agree that they currently have the skills needed to be exceptional at their job. This suggests that nearly half of managers feel they need some skills development to be successful in their roles. We think a key to success is working out what capabilities you have, and what you need for the future! To work out what skills teams have, we use our AI Skills Assessment tool. It assesses teams on their capabilities. We then help teams consider their strategic objectives, the mid term, and their tactical or short term objectives. 1.Strategic: What’s our product vision? 2. Mid term: What’s on the product roadmap? 3. Tactical: What’s in our plan of work for the next three months? We think a key to success is working out what capabilities you have, and what you need! There is no one size fits all here, but you’ve got to be specific especially if you have a junior product team, you can’t demand blindly that they become experts in all aspects of product development, across the entire lifecycle that simply hinders their ability to focus on some core strengths and needs. Knowing the top skills in product within your organization offers several advantages: A clear understanding of the  expertise within your team across different departments, means you can assign tasks and projects to individuals who are best equipped to handle them based on their skill strengths.
