🌟 Today, on Juneteenth, we commemorate the day when the last enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom 159 years ago. This day symbolizes joy, culture, and the long-delayed justice for the Black community. 🎉🖤
However, as we revel in this celebration, it’s crucial to remember the deep scars left by slavery on our collective consciousness. The struggle for equity continues, and our community still faces challenges with disparities in justice and access to opportunities.
As we honor this Freedom Day, let’s also renew our commitment to healing and building a society where everyone can flourish. A huge thanks to Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe for an inspiring flag-raising ceremony, and a special shout-out to Kenny Key from GameFace for capturing our reflections and celebrations in a moving tribute video.
📹 Check out the tribute and join us in working towards a future where all can enjoy true freedom, liberty, and dignity. Happy Juneteenth!

OK, these are my people right here. I know, I know, I'm in the right place. My name is Taryell Simmons and I'm so happy to be your host for this morning as we celebrate the 4th Annual Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony at the County of San Diego. Right. The Blackness. You can't be. Down. You have. Turning. No matter how hard we. Lift. Every voice and sing. Till earth, and heavan. heaven. Ring with the harmonies harmonies Of liberty Let our rejoicing rise High as the listening. Skies. Let it resound. Loud. Loud as the rolling sea Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us. Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us. Facing the rising sun. Of our new day begun Let us March on till Victory Is won. You'd better give it up there. Brittany will have time. Thank you so much. Thank you. I'm coming out as a participant to enjoy the Juneteenth flag raising with these community leaders, community pillars and America's finest city. So I'm here with the American finance people. Reason why we're here is because history is a shortcut to greatness. So we recognizing the Juneteenth flag, you know the symbolize our freedom and I'm here because I'm a participant in a product. You know, as a youth, I started out wanting to believe in something. I Start learning to believe in myself, but. He had to learn about yourself, your your genesis. So as a culture, we're learning about how we were freed from slavery in Texas. The year was on the flag for your research. The reason why it's two stars is because it's the new births. So I'm here to be able to beat that drum for justice, you know, be that drum major. But just really as a participant, they say, if I can, you can and really be that example. So we want to see you here next next year to raise the fact with us. And like I said, if we can, you can. Waiting that flag today. This is clean my heart. Queen Mother, Doctor. This simply finally free and we want you to continue to lead us if we were Joe 2024. We're raising the flag and Sandy. My name is Henry Anderson the third. I just graduated from millennial tech middle school and I'm here today with youth of the turnout campaign to get to up our running turn out here in San Diego and hopefully across the world in the network with so many different black people, so many different. To me, Juneteenth is an event, not even an event, but a holiday, a memorial to to Black people learning our voting history, learning our powers to vote, and learning so many other important things about our history and about our culture. And I'm a historian and genealogist. It's important to know your history. And so I say first start Googling, you know, for Juneteenth because you'll find a lot of information, but it, some of it may be correct, some of them may not. But I say just you know, do your own research and, and question everything. Thank you so much for what you do for our community. God bless you and, and I'm, I'm happy for you. Congratulations. And it's easier for young people to believe they can become a Fire Chief when they see a Fire Chief of their color. Firm believer of that. If you can see it, you can be it. Absolutely. When I was trying to get to the fire service, I, I had some challenges. People who look like me. Quotes. God bless you. Thank you so much Sir. Appreciate it. Dude, you know, so like, I remember hearing about Juneteenth when I was in the 4th grade. Shout out to my teacher, Miss Walker. And at the time I thought she was just making stuff up because I've never heard or seen anybody celebrate it. And Miss Walker was very Afrocentric. So I like this Walker crazy. Why is she talking about? And then as I grew older, I started like, doing my research. Realizing like, ohh, my gosh, why isn't this acknowledge? And I work for a big aerospace company and I was a employee resource group leader and the leader of the African American forum. And it was our group that actually was telling our coworkers about Juneteenth and we had a Juneteenth cookout and celebration on aerospace campus. So everybody's like, what is this? We're doing the wobble. We're over here barbecuing, like we're over here, you know, got the non melanated people. Like what? This. So it's just amazing to see how Juneteenth is now more prevalent, people are aware, it's being celebrated, it's being understood, and I want to thank Miss Walker for telling everybody in the first place.

Today, we celebrate Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans in the United States. Yet freedom isn't a singular event or something we simply cross off a to-do list—it's a continuous fight. A fight for justice. A fight for equality. A fight to eliminate deeply rooted, systemic racism.
As history has repeatedly shown us, no one is free until we are all free. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder that our liberation is intertwined, and we will only realize “a more perfect union” when we discard the hate, division, and animosity of yesterday so we can make room for the peace, justice, and healing our shared humanity deserves.
Together, we can build a future when freedom rings true for everyone. It won’t be easy. There will be times when we feel like things aren’t improving, but step by step, we will move forward on our journey to a better, kinder, and more just tomorrow.

Happy Juneteenth! Today, we celebrate the end of slavery in the United States, a monumental day marking freedom for millions of Black Americans. We come together to honor those who fought for liberation and acknowledge the immense progress made since that fateful June 19th in 1865.
However, Juneteenth also serves as a stark reminder that the journey towards true equality is far from over. While the chains of physical slavery were broken, the shackles of systemic racism and economic disparity remain. Black communities continue to face marginalization in finance, with limited access to capital and fair lending practices. Insurance systems often perpetuate inequalities, and educational opportunities can be unequal. The issue of reparations for the lasting effects of slavery deserves serious national discussion.
For much of my government career in Detroit , I've dedicated myself to fighting against these very issues. Whether battling discriminatory lending practices or advocating for educational equity, I've seen firsthand the challenges faced by Black Americans striving for financial security and advancement.
Juneteenth is a time to celebrate, but it's also a call to action. We cannot be complacent. We must continue to dismantle the systems that perpetuate inequality and empower Black communities to achieve financial independence and true social mobility.
Let's honor the spirit of Juneteenth by amplifying Black voices, advocating for policies that promote racial equity, and supporting Black-owned businesses. Together, we can build a future where the promise of liberty extends beyond the absence of chains, and towards a society where opportunity thrives for all.

On June 19, 1865, the last enslaved people in Texas finally learned that they were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. This day became known as Juneteenth, an annual commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.
While Juneteenth marks an important milestone in American history, it also serves as a solemn reminder that the journey towards true equality for Black Americans has been long and arduous. Even after emancipation, systemic racism and injustice have persisted in many forms.
As we celebrate the joy of freedom on Juneteenth, we must also reflect on the work that still needs to be done to dismantle the legacy of slavery and achieve racial equity. Join us in honoring #Juneteenth by learning about its history, supporting Black-owned businesses, and getting involved with organizations working for racial justice and civil rights. Together, we can build a better future rooted in equality, understanding and mutual respect.
Despite the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the enslaved Black people of Galveston, Texas, endured over 2 more years of enslavement and exploitation until news of their freedom reached them on June 19, 1865. This coming Juneteenth, we invite you to join us in celebrating Black freedom and Black fortitude to fight for humanity and equality in the face of injustice and systemic oppression. We offer you the following reflection:
– What actions will you take to honor and defend Black people’s humanity, genius, labor, and contributions beyond Juneteenth?
– Given the way anti-Blackness is showing up in banning books, outlawing affirmative action, and attacking DEI efforts, what can we do to protect Black people’s “enduring spirit”?
– What are you willing to lose for Black liberation?
