China Surpasses US in Olympic Gold Medals at Paris 2024 Despite the US dominating in terms of athlete numbers and tourist presence, China has taken the lead in gold medals at the 2024 Paris Games. With 39 golds to America's 38, China's focus on diving, table tennis, weightlifting, shooting, and badminton has paid off. China's diving team swept all available gold medals, contributing to their overall lead. Additionally, China made breakthroughs in traditionally US-dominated sports like swimming, with two gold medals, including a historic win in the 4x100-meter medley relay. Chinese athletes also excelled in tennis, artistic swimming, and newer Olympic sports like sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing, and breaking. However, China's swimming success has been marred by controversy surrounding 23 swimmers who tested positive for banned substances in 2021 but were still allowed to compete. China has denied allegations of doping, attributing the positive tests to contaminated food. And a strong majority (80%) agree the sporting event will inspire tomorrow’s generation to participate in sport, with people in Indonesia (95%), China (92%) and India (91%) the most likely to think this. While there’s always some complaining on the long road to the Games once athletes from all corners of the world unite at the opening ceremony the positive vibes usually really ramp up and this year people are most excited to see football/soccer (28%), athletics (28%) and gymnastics (20%). Fans in Latin America are already amped up for the beautiful game, with people in Argentina (55%), Peru (50%) and Colombia (47%) the most interested in seeing football/soccer. On the flipside, sport climbing (3%) and surfing (3%, both first introduced in 2021), along with breakdancing (3%, new this year) are eliciting the least excitement. The Summer Olympics started last weekend with the kind of pageantry and ceremony that I think many people associate with France, and Paris itself. I myself have been involved with the Olympics since 1998, which was the Nagano Winter Olympics. Ironically, perhaps, Nagano is well known in Japan for being the Emperor's summer retreat. The Tokyo and Paris Olympics share a number of similarities, not the least being that both involve certain events taking place quite far from the host city. In Tokyo's case, some took place as far away as Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan's main islands. The events that took place in Hokkaido were the marathon and soccer, and they were held there because of the extreme heat in Tokyo which reached over 40C/100F. Paris has Tokyo beat however, with the Surfing taking place in Tahiti, 10,000 miles from Paris in the French Polynesian islands. When events must be held outside the host city, and when any significant decision must be made, protocol dictates that the IOC must approve everything. For Tokyo, I remember being involved in IOC meetings where many discussions of that sort were held due to the COVID pandemic. The clip below from the BBC shows that the athletes are being well taken care of. They'll be staying on a luxury cruise ship that even has a tattoo parlor onboard. Good morning, Malaysia!! It’s our Merdeka month, and did you watch the badminton match yesterday? We’re smashing through the Olympics with 2 bronze medals!🥉 Congrats to our badminton athletes, Aaron Chia, Soh Woo Yik and Lee Zi Jia who made us beam with pride. I wasn’t an avid sports watcher, but it is so heartwarming to see the entire country becoming one team, supporting, pouring hope and prayers into our badminton athletes in their games! My friends and I ended up having a blast last night as we came across the live stream on YouTube. Haha, it’s so funny that all of us girls were holding each other in excitement and nerves. 😅 This reminds me that just like in badminton, success hinges on a few key principles, highlighting the importance of TEAM: 🏸 Teamwork: Whether it’s doubles or singles, the synergy between players is everything as each move is coordinated and strategized. Similarly, in our work teams, collaboration and cooperation drive us toward our shared goals. 🏸Trust: For doubles, trusting their partners implicitly is a must. At work, trust in your team ensures that tasks are completed efficiently and that everyone can rely on each other’s strengths. 🏸 Support: Athletes have their coaches, trainers, teammates, and supporters who help them through every match. Having a positive and supportive environment in the workplace boosts morale and helps us overcome challenges. Don’t underestimate the power of encouragement—a pat on the back or a kind word can make all the difference! Again, a heartfelt congratulations and thank you to our athletes, aka the heroes! Oh dear, doesn't reflect well on the government: "Did Singapore underestimate costs of hosting World Aquatics Championships? Singapore will hold some of the competition’s events in a temporary pool in a car park, with some sources saying costs in the initial hosting bid were underestimated." Well that will look great on photos of the event and the videos, swimming in a car park!! 😲🙄🤣 Apparently this is costing $100m!!! I can think of better things to be doing with $100m! Can't you.
