It kept me thinking that disappointment isn't just a part of life; it's our uninvited, persistent tutor. That job promotion that went to someone else? A tutorial in resilience. The trust shattered by a friend? A tough lesson in forgiveness. And that shiny new gadget that wasn't as shiny in reality? A reminder that joy isn't unboxed, it's created. Here's the deal: life’s letdowns don't need to be your downfall. They're the plot twists in your success story. 📖✨ But let’s be real, it’s tempting to obsess on the ‘closed door’. We all do it. In June of 1998, during our senior year of high school, my parents went to Puerto Vallarta, leaving me to hold down the fort in Chicago. Around that time, my friend Jerry faced some serious issues at home and needed a place to stay. Without hesitation, I welcomed him in. We spent a few weeks sharing my home, navigating the challenges of teenage life together. Fast forward to Ozzfest that year – a weekend we had all been eagerly anticipating. Jerry had promised to drive me to meet the rest of our friends. I put my faith in him, trusting that he would come through. However, on the weekend of the event, he never showed up, leaving me stranded and deeply disappointed. This not only ruined my plans for the weekend but also damaged our friendship. Trust is a fragile thing, and being let down by someone I considered a close friend was a harsh lesson in the importance of reliability and commitment. This experience taught me a few valuable lessons that have resonated throughout my career: Trust but Verify: While it’s essential to trust your colleagues and partners, having a backup plan is crucial. In business, just like in life, contingencies ensure continuity and success. Resilience in the Face of Disappointment: Being let down by Jerry was a tough pill to swallow, but it reinforced the importance of resilience. In the professional world, setbacks are inevitable. What matters is how we bounce back and learn from them. Support Systems Matter: Offering Jerry a place to stay was my way of supporting a friend in need. In business, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment can make a significant difference in team morale and productivity. Commitment to Follow-Through: Jerry’s failure to follow through on his promise highlighted the importance of reliability. In our professional lives, being dependable and honoring commitments builds trust and strengthens relationships. This story from my past serves as a reminder of the importance of trust, resilience, support, and commitment in both personal and professional contexts. Josh Rubin here once last time for today. Over the course of my career, I have learned some really valuable lessons: 1️⃣ Be transparent: It is okay to not have every answer to every question. But saying you do can lead yourself down a tricky path. 2️⃣ Pick the right rooms to be in: You will learn the most and grow the fastest by spending time with others who have different skill sets and knowledge than you. 3️⃣ Be a team player: Being at a company is like being on a sports team. You and your team will accomplish amazing things if you avoid the “that is not my job” attitude. 4️⃣ Never burn any bridges: It is so important to understand that it takes a team to succeed and you never know when you’ll need to lean on your network for help. Some days feel like I accomplished little. And I end up beating myself for it. Here's a quick journal exercise that helps me remember that, no matter what, we always move the needle. Tonight before you go to bed, grab paper and pencil and make a quick list (don't over-think it... go for quantity): 1) Things you started. 2) Things you completed. 3) People you helped/assisted/supported. 4) Things that you're grateful for. 5) Things you want to tackle tomorrow. Simple yet extremely powerful. We tend to over-focus on grandiose accomplishments when in truth, success is the result of compounding small steps. As Thanksgiving is tomorrow, I can't help but reflect on this year's journey. It's been a crazy one, but who doesn't love a good thrill now and then? This year has been a masterclass in resilience and strength. It's like lifting weights, but instead of muscles, we're building character (and let me tell you, my character is pretty buff now). At Hub Recruiting- a ZRG Partners Company, we've navigated challenges that would make even the boldest shiver, yet here we are, standing more vital than ever. But what's a journey without people to share it with? I've made phenomenal connections in the trenches of work and the wild world outside. These connections aren't just LinkedIn profiles; they're the real MVPs who bring color to my daily grind.  And speaking of color, let's talk about the brightest hues in my life – my wife, our adorable dogs, and my fantastic extended family. They are my rock, cheering squad, and Netflix binge partners. Grateful? You bet I am. They've been the calm in my professional storm, reminding me that every cloud has a silver lining (or, in my case, a rainbow 🌈). This year has been dotted with successes, both big and small.
