Don’t be afraid to get technical.
Here’s what I mean. I often have people who reach out to me about transitioning into tech and one of the first things I get asked is, “Do I need to learn how to code?”
Well, of course not.
You don’t have to learn code or get a bunch of certs because there are plenty of non-technical jobs in tech.
But often, when I hear this question, I know it’s coming from a place of fear and intimidation. Some people don’t believe their ability to learn and master technical skills.
But may I challenge you on this with a little data. And I only share this because I know most people that desire to get in the tech industry are wanting to do so because of the promising financial security the industry offers many.
In recent tech layoffs, sales people accounted for about 20% those layoffs. And companies doing mass layoffs cut about 50% of non-technical roles (like recruiting, on-boarding, etc.)
So what are the most layoff-proof roles? They are the super techie roles that many try to avoid.
Roles like Cloud Engineering, Machine Learning, Data Scientists, Cyber Security, and Software Developers continue to be in high demand and are typically not the first to be on the chopping block (unless the company massively over hired and gave ridiculous compensation packages…ie FANG.)
My point is, if job security is what you’re looking for, don’t be afraid to go the technical route. I mean, don’t pick something you’re going to absolutely hate lol.
But be opened minded, especially if you are in this for the long haul.
