#ListeningSession 6 - GCF’s President and CEO, Matthew Randazzo and Chief Impact Officer, Rasheda Malcolm-Cromwell hosted an open forum with organizations in the arts and culture sector that enrich our region through creative endeavors, employment and arts education. During the conversation, attendees expressed a clear need for more funding and support for staffing and operations. Additional takeaways include a desire for more artists to be at the decision-making table, better access to boardrooms and private sector spaces, and greater recognition of the positive effects the arts have on our regional economy. How do you think we can best serve our region’s artists and cultural institutions? What opportunities do the arts bring to the region and how can we ensure these opportunities persist?

New NACC Member Research 🖊️ A new report by The LBJ School of Public Affairs Professor Francie Ostrower sheds light on the artistic and fiscal challenges that 25 performing arts organizations encountered while seeking to build new audiences, yielding insights into approaches that worked, and those that didn’t. Overall, the findings suggest that while expanding audiences is possible, it may not always happen on an organization’s desired terms. Therefore, if organizations want to change how audiences engage with them, they must be open to changing themselves. I have two very strong opinions about the value of the arts and arts organizations. 1) art saves lives, and 2) the arts are very large social and economic drivers. This article focuses on #2. “Nationally, the nonprofit arts and culture sector generated $151.7 billion of economic activity in 2022 — $73.3 billion in spending by arts and culture organizations and an additional $78.4 billion in event-related expenditures by their audiences. The industry supported over 2.6 million jobs, provided $101 billion in personal income to residents, and generated $29.1 billion in tax revenue to local, state, and federal governments.” Imagine the return in our communities. If you don’t know the value of the arts in your community, you should. And, we all should support the growth of culturally relevant, and inclusive arts programming, performances, and events. Why? While There is art for the sake of art... There is a social impact on communities where arts are present and accessible.

When Interim Executive Director Greg Netzer joined RACC this spring, we asked him a few questions to share with you: 🌱 How do you envision leveraging RACC’s strengths to deepen the organization’s resilience and continued impact within the Tri-County area? 🌿 RACC’s greatest strength has always been its most underappreciated one: Its ability to understand the difficulties artists and arts organizations face in surviving amid the larger and more commercial structures of our society, and to help them navigate through those difficulties with skill and purpose. RACC remains deeply principled and service-focused at a time when our constituents need both more than ever. Maintaining our ability to deliver service will strengthen our organization and our impact. 🌱 How do you plan to engage and collaborate with local arts and cultural partners to reinforce the organization’s impact on our community? 🌿I believe RACC’s future will be centered on the work its partners and community most need it to do – the work no other organization does or can do. We have a strongly held belief of what that work is, but that only matters if our community agrees. So I want focus our conversations with our community on identifying their most critical needs. 📣🎨 Applications for our Council's Creative Communities Scheme are now open, so be sure to get yours in by Monday 18 March. The scheme, backed by Creative New Zealand, aims to increase participation in the arts, broaden the range and diversity of the arts available to communities and enhance and strengthen the local creative sector. Funding is awarded to projects, rather than the people undertaking the project. Successful projects will take place between Wednesday 1 May 2024 and Thursday 1 May 2025 and must meet at least one of the following funding criteria: • Access and participation – The project will create opportunities for local communities to engage with and participate in arts activities. • Diversity – The project will support the diverse arts and cultural traditions of local communities, enriching and promoting their uniqueness and cultural diversity. • Young people – The project will enable and encourage young people (under 18 years) to engage with and actively participate in the arts.
