Best of luck to all the teams presenting today at the S4 Class of 2023 Demo Day! As an adjunct lecturer at SUNY New Paltz, I had the opportunity to participate in the National Science Foundation (NSF) Regional I-Corps and SUNY Startup Summer School (S4) from The Research Foundation for SUNY. Over the past month, I was immersed in entrepreneurial training. From the perspective of a researcher, I identified new ways to apply my NLP and AI research from the civic technology project Block Party to solve real-life challenges. Thank you to Olga E Petrova, Ed Bizari, Bandhana Katoch, Esq., MBA, MS, RTTP, Epiphany Munoz, Per Stromhaug, and all the fantastic speakers (such as Arel Moodie) who shared their expertise and delivered an impactful program. Special shoutout to Eliza Edge for connecting me to this valuable resource as a faculty. I wanted to share some of the key takeaways I learned from this intensive program for anyone developing a new idea: 1) Frame the challenge as a research question, stay curious, open-minded, and ready to pivot - after testing your assumptions of course 2) Understand the difference between a painkiller vs. a vitamin 3) Use your aspirational goals as a guide for specific tangible outcomes 4) Listen more and talk less And last but perhaps most important: 5) Customer discovery is a never-ending process

As a student, I've dreamed of doing an MBA at Stanford. With time passing by, after getting married, having kids, and other life obligations came by, this vision became less realistic.
