Thinking about whether you should measure your impact on volunteers? Stop. Chances are the work's already been done for you. There's already a wealth of evidence that there is a positive association for non-disabled adults between formal volunteering and - improved life satisfaction - increased happiness - reduced symptoms of depression Instead spend your time exploring if your volunteers find your roles to be - balanced, not overburdening them and options to change commitment - meaningful, linked to what they want from their roles - connected, with opportunities to meet, build relationships and belong - appreciated, through training, support and gratitude These are the key 'mechanisms of change' that can help to explain whether volunteers experience the above benefits or not when volunteering, so focus on whether people feel this way and use the evidence base build your case for impact instead. #volunteer Yes, you. In a world where need is great, giving can be greater. Conversation recently: this is why you have us. Response: I know, but sometimes I feel like it’s all on me. I encourage you to donate a conversation, a redline, an introduction. Perhaps even a committee or board time allotment. Despite your schedule, I guarantee that - if you have the mental and emotional capacity right now - you have the gift to give. "Did you know Jane's wife had a heart attack?" ... was an SMS I received from one of our network members in the night. It stopped me in my tracks. But I also couldn't stop smiling. "Why are you smiling?" quizzes my husband. "Because these two consultants did not know each other 2 years ago, and now look at this. They know each other at this level in life. What other business networks do you get that?" This and countless other examples of comradry and care, is a core part of the Benefolk community (and Xfactor before that). It's wellbeing at its deepest sense, and wellbeing for those who get up everyday to share their skills, services and experience with clients. As a former consultant in the charity sector, it's the network that I wished existed but didn't. I am sharing this, as the Benefolk Network is a special community to be part of, and we're inviting new business members to join us this year, for the first time in 18 months. It's ideal for experienced owner-managed operators, who want to work collaboratively with other business owners, and make a bigger impact by being part of the Benefolk community and mission. Today we are sharing some insights from Wellbeing Exeter. They have three main strands of their work: connecting the community; building the community; and organising physical activity. Community Connectors know a wide range of local opportunities and can connect people to those right for them. Community Builders support local residents and communities to grow their own ideas, try new things that bring people together, improve their wellbeing and make their community a better place to live.
