Jay Goninen great write up!
A few items from the article stood out to me and I would like to share some thoughts on one of them.
"Current service manager's snapshot"
Any service manager that feels the way that SM you described felt, must make the time to train his replacement. (not in a literal way)
I'll come back to that!
"Running around like a chicken with my head cut off" is a leader that has the ability to deal with many challenges, (hence the reason they earned their position as a SM), and have all the undoubted wisdom to solve any challenge and everyone,(including your own team) relies on them to solve every problem. Major problem.
I was one of those SM.
I had to take a step back and remove the "blinders" and re-access what my ultimate goal was. I was always stuck fixing the problems, instead of being the leader, and trainer I needed to be. (Where did my day go?)
Taking on the task to solve all the problems didn't help my team either. It stunted their growth.
After reflecting (with "the end in mind" -Franklin Covey was a genius) and re-accessing what I wanted to achieve, I challenged my team to come up with their ideas of how to solve a problem (with a cap in time for getting it solved). I asked them, "when you bring me a problem/challenge, bring along your idea for a solution as well."
Not to my surprise did my team begin to take on these challenges, solve them, advise me on what the outcome was, rejoice, and my work load got easier. I was aloud the time to be the leader my team needed and the trainer they deserved.
Allowing them the opportunity to implement their solution and figure it out, (with my guidance), I let them feel the fruits of taking on the challenge, solving them, and allowing me the time to implement ideas to grow the business.
Coming back to "training my replacement" as a SM or any leader, we are responsible for the quality of work we deliver to our guest. From the write-up delivery to the active delivery, our availability to lead and train our teams is time sensitive. We were hired to produce results, and help sustain, train our department, and not just put out fires.
Allowing me the time to train, opened up other opportunities for overall growth.
Cheers!
