The UK and European tech sector has seen an increase in women in the workforce since BCSWomen was founded a few decades ago. There have been women in computing from the beginning - working on LEO and at Bletchley Park Trust in 1930s and 1940s. We know that with women like Dame Stephanie Shirley, Dame Wendy Hall, and Professor Sue Black OBE, Hannah Dee and so many others we have role models. And thanks to events like the Lovelace Symposium, I know there is talent pipeline. When Dame Stephanie founded her software business (1959), there was little opportunity for women to run any type of business. The commercial banking offers have improved considerably! But transactional banking isn’t the only financial option founders need. There is still some suggestions that, ‘women don’t want to be in tech - if they did, they would be’. If all things were equal, that might be interesting to evaluate. However, part of the reason that there aren’t so many women founders is (not a lack of desire or grit but) inequality of access to business funding. In Ireland, 75% of VC (venture capital) funding goes to all-men teams. The funders seem to be inadvertently selecting out women - or at least tolerating founders who don’t include women in their teams. Hearing repeated Silicon Valley stories of female founders invited to pitch in hot tubs or in casinos bars, I’m not surprised. For women founders in tech to achieve parity, it is time there was a challenge for VCs to find places where women founders can pitch with equity. And this stuff matters to the economy because the statistics for women on boards suggest businesses are more successful with a diverse board. The same is true in tech problem solving - diversity of backgrounds can hone products and services to be better for all. There is an opportunity to find out more in Dublin this May. At the Dublin Tech Summit 2024, the TechFoundHer team will be presenting more about: - why we need more women tech founders for our economy, society and the world. - why transparency of gendered data in business is needed to support positive change for everyone. Explore the latest in tech and business together with tickets to the summit on 29-30 May 2024 at the RDS in Dublin. https://lnkd.in/eK7EMe_Z #DubTechSummit #TechFoundHer #vcfunding #vc #techentrepreneur #womanownedbusiness #womeninstem

Leaders of the world unite... or at least take a look at this. Applications now open for the SW of England Tech Advisory Group. As Henry Ford is supposed to have said: "If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself." Together we can work smarter to ensure our tech companies are supported, investment is secured and the skills we need for the jobs we need are there. It's only through sharing knowledge, agreeing the route forward and working together, that we can achieve the pace we need to make this happen. AI, trust, data, skills, investment, tech that helps solve the world's most urgent problems, opportunity, diversity and inclusion, innovation, research, creativity, startup, scaleup. There is much to be done, much to be excited about and much to progress. We need to be brave, go big and get on with it.
🚨 Big news klaxon! 🚨 We're launching a tech sector advisory group - and applications are open. 👇 https://lnkd.in/euM7pxeQ The South West of England Technology Sector Advisory Group will help shape the future development of the tech sector across the region. Facilitated by Tech South West, the group will comprise 15 senior representatives from business and academia, to help progress the strategic direction of the technology sector in the region. Toby Parkins, chair of Tech South West, who also helped found Software Cornwall, Agile on the Beach festival and FibreHub Cornwall, said: “The sector benefits from a collaborative approach, which is why we believe an advisory group, packed with exceptional talent, people with experience across industry and academia, could really help us define future direction and to progress activity.” Learn more about getting involved: https://lnkd.in/euM7pxeQ Dan Pritchard | Ben Cooper | Richard Beedell | Niki Davies | Caitlin Gould | Anthony Story | Kris Sum | Paul Bird | Wayne Loschi | Ben Shorrock | Barry Tottle | Lizzie Tottle (Ginbey) | Lucy P.

🌎 CONTEXT🌍CONNECTION🌏COMMUNICATION In the dynamic world of tech, truly understanding your market is critical but also complex. And disruption can come quickly. I've learned that insight comes from engaging directly with customers, understanding their needs, and experiencing the market firsthand. It's easy to become so engrossed in our solutions that we miss the real problems we should be solving. With that in mind, I'm very excited for this Tech Week Webinar next week where my colleague Sarah Hindle is facilitating a discussion with four leading NZ tech innovators. They'll share their experiences on the importance of being present in the market to truly grasp customer needs, with a view to nailing product-market fit. #TechLeaders #NZTech #ProductMarketFit #CustomerEngagement
If you’re aspiring to take your tech business global, you must be where your customers are. Spending time in your potential international markets will be invaluable to developing your export strategy and product market fit. Join our panel of kiwi businesses at #Techweek24, who have spent time offshore in a learning capacity. Hear what they learned, what surprised them and why they couldn’t achieve the same outcomes from New Zealand.
