Do you know the problematic history of birth control in the US? This #womenshistorymonth I'm posting the "ABCs" of #womenshealth, expanding what society usually considers "women's health issues" and bringing in a heavy dose of #intersectionality. 🔔 Follow me for the rest of the alphabet 🏷️ Tag a person or a company below that is furthering women's health! Today is L 1. Lupus (SLE): Lupus is a chronic #autoimmunedisease that can damage any part of the body. It is 15x more likely to affect those assigned female at birth than male. Studies have found that anti-Black racism can generate a variety of psychobiological responses that contribute to health risks, including inflammation. Black women, specifically, tend to have the highest prevalence of lupus in the US and experience greater disease severity compared to white women. 2. Long-Acting Reversible Contraception*: LARC, an important birth control and contraceptive option, is not always prescribed equally. A recent study revealed a high prevalence of both pressures to get (26 percent of current users) and keep (11 percent of ever users) LARC overall. This was highest for young (<25 years) mothers, low-income, unmarried, and Latinx/e women. There could seriously be a series just on the problematic nature of contraceptive coercion and its roots in eugenics. Can we, just this once, separate politics from women's health? 👥💭 Welcome to Women’s History Month 📆 where The Washington Post recently made a move, playing down the side effects women face on birth control and shutting down their voices. But why aren’t we discussing: ✚ The excruciating pain of periods - a leading reason for prescribing the pill, with endometriosis diagnosis often delayed for up to a decade. ✚ Acne and irregular periods - also common reasons for prescribing the pill, with PCOS diagnosis typically taking 2-3 healthcare providers. Women aren't dismissing the pill, they're rejecting a flawed medical system that demeans their right to quality care. They are standing up, demanding better healthcare, more research, and refusing to be dismissed by doctors - confirmed by research. Who gains from those minimizing women's experiences and silencing their voices? 🎙️🚫 Why not address the lack of funding to improve birth control? 💰❓ Yes, the pill is crucial. Yes, we need equal access to it. And we want a healthcare system to see us women beyond our reproductive roles. Adolescent pregnancy is a complex issue with far-reaching consequences. We can't simply treat the symptoms; we must address the root causes. Going through a recent paper, "Perspectives on Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Strategies in the United States: Looking Back, Looking Forward" by Brindis et al., highlights a shift: focusing on the Social Determinants of Health. He emphasizes on the necessity for the following. 1. Robust and relevant sex education. This encompasses comprehensive information about relationships, healthy choices, and access to resources. 2. Youth-centered solutions. Engaging adolescents as partners in designing programs and policies will be essential for ensuring they are effective and relevant to their needs. 3. Leveraging technology From telehealth to digital platforms, technology can empower youth with access to information, connect them to services, and even break down stigma. 4. Addressing systemic inequities. We must recognize that adolescent pregnancy disproportionately impacts marginalized communities being one root causes of these disparities. This isn't just about statistics; it's about building a society that empowers young people. FemTech is on the rise. What is FemTech? It’s a phrase coined in 2016 by Ida Tin and represents technology aimed at consumer products and solutions targeting women’s health. These companies target fertility, maternal health, menopause, menstrual health, pelvic and sexual health, and contraception. Research by McKinsey indicates that “the dynamics underlying FemTech are accelerating: public awareness, company formation, and funding.” The surge of FemTech companies is making healthcare for women more accessible and breaking long held stigmas related to women’s health. McKinsey reports there is wide range of “white space” to fill in this area to reach more than just reproductive health. What are your thoughts on FemTech? Share with us in the comments!

This year, National Women’s Health Week (which we think should be every week!) is dedicated to empowering women to take charge of their health journeys and highlighting health issues unique to women. We know a little something about this mission—because it’s the work we do every day.
