This is the best talk I've heard so far about academic technology transfer! Thanks Lesley for so candidly sharing your insights and bringing the reality! Yes, the missions and overarching goals of universities (and tech transfer offices) are so different from that from private sectors; therefore, the framework there and the investment metrics are not quite applicable here. Plus, university IPs are in the very early stage of the entire innovation life cycle which could span 20+ or 30+ years, facing a series of "valleys of death" to overcome, relying on other entities and resources for product development and deployment; so the question lingering in my mind at the end of the talk is what can we do, as an individual investing our limited time on this profession in such cycles of 20+/30+ years, and also as a human living in a technological era? ⏳👩🔧
Don't miss out on this insightful presentation by our Executive Director, Lesley Millar-Nicholson, on "The Role of Technology Transfer"! Presented during this past winter's IAP Golden Speaker Series, Lesley sheds light on the important role of tech transfer in universities. Whether you're new to the field or a seasoned professional, this talk is a must-watch for anyone interested in the intersection of research and industry. Lesley Millar-Nicholson is the Executive Director of MIT’s Technology Licensing Office (TLO) and was part of the Founding Leadership team of MIT Office of Strategic Alliances and Technology Transfer (OSATT) formed in 2019. As TLO Executive Director, she leads a team of technology transfer professionals. Ms. Millar-Nicholson is a past President Board of Governors of Certified Licensing Professionals Inc, a member of AUTM and the Licensing Executive Society, and a past Board Member of Cambridge Enterprise, UK. A native of Scotland, Ms. Millar-Nicholson has a B.Ed., M.Ed., MBA and is a Certified Licensing Professional.
