Today is International School Meals Day - a reminder of the delight and security that free school food brings across the world. In Finland, Brazil, India, Estonia, Sweden and Scotland primary school children enjoy free hot meals and can eat, learn and thrive together. In most of England that’s just not true of course - where more than a third of primary school pupils know another child who sometimes goes hungry, and over a quarter said they share food with friends several times a month (National Education Union poll). International School Meals Day is about: - Raising awareness of the importance of the nutritional quality of school meals worldwide - Emphasising the connection between healthy eating, education and better learning - Connecting children around the world to foster healthy eating habits and promote well-being - Sharing success stories of school meal programs around the globe - Raising awareness of the hunger and poverty issues being addressed through school feeding programmes All things that we, in one of the world’s most developed countries, can and should be learning from others. I’d love to mark the day with some good news - but last week’s budget showed no support. Government funding for two-course, hot school meals remains at £2.41, having risen by just 10p in seven years. You may also have seen the school Head who, so appalled by the school meals on offer at his school, photographed the food and sent pics to the parents. The Head says he has no control, the national caterer cites ‘exponential increase in costs’. I agree with both of them, although my greatest sympathy lies with the schools and families. No - poor, beige meals are not acceptable, do better. Yes, costs are rising. It takes one click and one minute to call for change ⬇️ The National Education Union is asking us all to write to our MP - here’s the link - I’m really hoping that next year will be a real celebration. Let’s see if on the next International School Meals Day all school children in England can enjoy a free and nutritious lunch together. #InternationalSchoolMealsDay https://lnkd.in/e7KZVWhg

I think one of the best things one could do for students is to create a mentoring program for those already working in the schools like paraprofessionals to become teachers while still working to earn their initial teaching certificate. The program should include those who already have a College degree. One of the largest barriers to getting a teaching degree is the cost of going back to college.
