The new era of CoPilot+ PCs is upon us, bursting onto the scene at your local Best Buy with a bevy of laptops all designed to do AI tasks locally. To be clear, there are two classes of these new AI PCs. All have a new, almost indescribable Copilot keyboard button (it looks nothing like a copilot on an airplane), but only Copilot+ PCs with new Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus chips are ready to perform a variety of local AI tricks and tasks. On June 18, 2024 – the official launch day – I subwayed downtown to a huge Best Buy to see, touch, and play with all those new Copilot+ PCs. There are a lot of them. Gaze upon Dell’s leaked Qualcomm X Elite-powered laptops Want a look at Dell’s new notebook lineup that’s apparently powered by Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon X Elite processors? Courtesy of Windows Report, these leaked images come ahead of Microsoft’s May 20th event where new Surfaces (and other laptops) are expected to sport the same chips. They unsurprisingly look like laptops — albeit with overall slimmer profiles. The most interesting model is Dell’s new XPS 13 9345, which seems to be a sleeker rebirth of the XPS 13 Plus from 2022. It’s got the same touchy touch-bar on the top row and comes with only two USB-C ports for I/O. Several PC manufacturers have recently launched Qualcomm-powered laptops, with many models hitting store shelves and shipping out today. These Copilot+ PCs feature Arm-based Snapdragon X chips with a 45 TOPS NPU, introducing new AI-powered features like Paint’s Cocreator. Additionally, they offer access to the controversial Windows Recall feature, exclusive to Windows Insiders. While these new Copilot+ PCs initially get a few new features, third-party apps such as Adobe Photoshop, DaVinci Resolve Studio, CapCut, and more will leverage the built-in NPUs to run AI features locally. Microsoft released new Surface Pro 10 and Laptop 6, but wait! These are business-oriented versions with limited availability and unappealing design. If you're a regular customer looking for the newest Surface Pro, hold off on buying the outdated Surface Pro 9. There's better news ahead! HP unveiled a new AI-powered laptop, the HP OmniBook X. This 14-inch laptop boasts a long battery life (26 hours) and is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite chip. It starts at $1,199 and is available for pre-order now, with shipping starting on June 18th, 2024. It is a consumer-focused laptop (as opposed to the business-oriented EliteBook line). Also, the "X" in the name refers to its position (10th) in a new naming scheme by HP. More over, the Qualcomm chip allows for powerful AI features and long battery life. HP is excited about the potential of Windows on ARM laptops with this new chip. According to a recent report from Windows Central, Microsoft is gearing up for a Surface launch event on March 21, which could see the debut of the Surface Pro 10 and Surface Laptop 6. The latter is expected to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite, an ARM-based laptop chipset that's aiming to offer Windows laptops a chipset competitive with Apple's M-series chips in MacBooks. With an ARM base, the chip is expected to offer much better battery life, and Qualcomm has made some big claims about performance. The Surface Laptop 6 would also see changes including thinner display bezels, a haptic trackpad, additional USB ports, and a dedicated key for Copilot.
