🌖 As the space industry in the ‘New Space Era’ is increasingly dominated by private actors, the business and human rights scholarship should join the conversation. At the occasion of the State of the Union 2023 address, Ursula von der Leyen proposed under the initiative “A Europe fit for the digital age” the EU Space Law as one of the main columns.   After having worked towards it for years now, I enthusiastically appreciate the European Commission publicly assuming this important task and including the EU Space Law in the priorities for the upcoming years. This step was long overdue.   I will continue to advocate that factors such as sustainability standards in space are finally duly addressed. That means additional time / food for thoughts & benchmarking as well as on the field and creative legal work with stakeholders to further secure their projects so that they can be structured, financed, insured… This timelapse will hopefully trigger further cooperation between space and sectoral regulatory authorities to find additional pragmatic tools to enfance innovation on a number of markets and answer innovators’ questions that are not taken care of today. In parallel, the #space #data #space’s scope and its positive role becomes bigger and bigger while new #cyber security rules will soon be effective all over the EU including with NIS2, which will apply on #earth 🌎 and in space. International law forbids the extension of territorial sovereignty into space. Does this doom the nascent space economy to perpetual property rights insecurity? Not at all, Peter Leeson and I argue in a 2014 paper. "Economic theory demonstrates how private individuals can enforce property rights without reliance on government. And economic reality demonstrates how they in fact do so. There’s nothing special about this theory or its manifestations in practice that would limit it to terrestrial property rights." We were delighted to join forces with PROTECT BALTIC for the Baltic Stakeholder Conference 2024 in Helsinki in February. The conference report is now available, marking a crucial moment in collaborative efforts towards safeguarding #biodiversity in the Baltic Sea. Over 230 participants, including policymakers, industry leaders, environmental advocates, and researchers convened to discuss how we can collectively work to improve #marine #protectedareas in the Baltic, addressing themes such as management effectiveness and guidelines, spatial #modelling, #ecosystemservices and valuation, legal frameworks for planning marine spaces, the new MPA Portal, #restoration action plans, #governance, monitoring, and ecological coherence. MPA Europe's Regional Stakeholder Workshop for the Baltic was part of this great event, and we thank the PROTECT BALTIC team for kindly allowing us to share their platform. We identified opportunities to strengthen the outcomes from both projects through ongoing #collaboration and we discussed with #stakeholders how our results can strengthen existing MPAs, extend the network of MPAs and support science-based marine spatial planning (#msp).
