GETTING THE MOST FROM YOUR JOB SEARCH Job hunting is tough, especially in the current market. In fact hunting for a new role can be a full time job in its own right. So how do you keep going and get the most from the time you put in? ✔️ Focus on your goal There's no doubt that your job hunting journey will involve ups and downs, highs and lows, almost on a daily basis. Focusing on your goal will help you ride the turbulence and keep you motivated. ✔️ Be consistent Build strong job hunting habits through consistency. This doesn't necessarily mean doing the same things every day. If routine works for you, then go with it. But if variety is more your thing, then mix it up a bit. But be consistent. ✔️ Be disciplined Discipline is the foundation of consistency. You could set yourself weekly KPIs to help with consistency. For example that could be to connect with 50 useful new LI connections (these could be potential hiring managers, internal and external recruiters etc.), send your CV to 10 target firms (this is separate to job applications), follow up every application from the previous week, post content on LI 2 days each week, etc. Focusing on relevant KPIs can help you push through when times are tough and your motivation flags. They also don't need to be huge targets. Small, achievable steps add up over time if you're consistent in achieving them. I don't suggest making job applications a KPI. You should apply for as many or as few suitable vacancies that arise each week. When it comes to job applications, focus on quality rather than quantity. Setting yourself an application KPI can encourage the latter. ✔️ The 2-Day Rule The 2-Day Rule helps maintain consistency and form positive habits. It basically means never missing 2 days in a row (aside of illness and holiday) and encourages you to not give up on your journey. It urges you to show up even when you're tired or not feeling it. Showing up is key to success. ✔️ Don't forget to take a break During your job hunting 'working' day, factor in time out. I'd suggest going for a walk to clear your head if you can. You'll find it really helps to reduce stress and improve your focus. The market is tough at the moment and you can be assured that you're not alone in finding it that way. But it will get better. As I reflect on my current job search, I can't help but notice some amusing parallels between hunting for a lucky penny and finding that perfect job. 1. The Search: Scouring the Ground (and Job Boards) Just as finding a lucky penny requires keen observation and a bit of luck, so does discovering the ideal job opportunity. 👬 Job hunting is a lot like dating. You send out your first message to show interest and you might get invited to meet. You dress up, make a good impression, and hope that they ask to see you again. 👻 Sometimes they want to get to know you better, or you can get ghosted after a first meeting. This is what happened to me after an in-person interview for a role that I applied for just a few days earlier. I was called to say my application was of interest, and asked to come into the office the very next day. All very swift and exciting. I learned the job description, researched the company, and put on a suit. I felt I spoke well for myself, made my case as a strong candidate for the role, and was told I would be kept informed of the next stages. 🔕 And I never heard anything back. While the recruiting process may be a lengthy and resource-heavy endeavour for an employer, there should still be some considerations made for your selected candidates. If the time is made to whittle down all of your applicants to a handful of finalists, who are then invited in for an interview, there could still be the time put aside to send even a quick 'thanks, but no thanks'. After all, no-one likes being ghosted after a first date.

The application process can also be exhausting, with online forms to fill out, assessments to take, and interviews to attend. It's like being trapped in a labyrinth without knowing the way out. However, all of these challenges should not discourage you. We need to be determined to find our oasis. We can upskill, network, and keep tailoring our applications.
